Amid increased tourist inflow into Himachal Pradesh, CM Jairam Thakur directs authorities to strictly enforce Covid protocols

Amid increased tourist inflow into Himachal Pradesh, CM Jairam Thakur directed the state authorities to ensure Covid appropriate behaviour. He said the state government was not against this but want to ensure that people must adopt Covid-19 appropriate behaviour in the state

Following visuals and videos of crowded holiday and tourist destinations, which showed hundreds flocking to hill stations in Himachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Jairam Thakur on Friday appealed to tourists to strictly follow Covid-19 protocols.

Thakur said shutting the tourism sector for long is not a solution at all. He said the state government was not against this but the government was ensuring that people must adopt Covid-19 appropriate behaviour in the state. The CM had earlier directed hotels in the state to follow all Covid-19 standard operating procedures.

Concerned over manifold increase in tourist arrival at key hill stations in Himachal after fall in Covid-19 cases, Thakur directed deputy commissioners, district police chiefs and chief medical officers to ensure strict implementation of appropriate Covid behaviour norms to check spread of the virus. The chief minister asked the police to identify places where the tourist flow was very high and also directed them to deploy additional force to tackle the situation.

For the past few days, thousands of people have been flocking to tourist spots and hill stations in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand to beat the scorching heat of North India as the monsoon continues to play spoilsport. It might be a welcome sign for the travel and tourism industry but it has come much to the displeasure of government officials, health experts as well as the top ministers of the government.

Pictures and videos on social media platforms showed gross violation of Covid-19 protocols as the crowds can be seen without a mask and breaking social distancing norms. The instances of overcrowding have led to fears that the much-feared third wave of the pandemic might be more severe than earlier imagined.

Earlier, pictures from market and streets of hill station Manali had gone viral last week, in which people could be seen not following the social distancing norms, while some did not even wear masks.

With the increase in influx of tourists to these hill stations, authorities are scrambling to ensure implementation of Covid protocols amid fears of an impending Covid third wave infections.

ANI had on Friday shared visuals of people bathing in the river Ganga in Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar. The tourists said that they are not afraid of Covid-19 and were confident that they arrived before the third wave. To this, Haridwar city police official Abhay Singh said efforts are being made to bring awareness among people.

Social media platforms in the last few days have been abuzz with pictures from the markets and streets of Manali. While many users expressed concerns over the violation of Covid protocols by the tourists, others grabbed the opportunity to create memes to take a swipe at the carelessness by the tourists.
