The easiest and most effective way to keep germs at bay is to wash your hands regularly with soap and water. The need for handwashing became more important after the outbreak of coronavirus in 2019. Apart from this, washing our hands regularly protects us from viral infections and flu.

Global Handwashing Day is celebrated on October 15 every year across the world. This day is observed to remind us how important handwashing is in order to stay safe and healthy. Just soap and water can do wonders for you. This is one of the best ways to protect ourselves from getting sick.

On Global Handwashing Day, let’s talk about the ways that you should avoid while washing your hands:

Throughout the day our hands touch many surfaces that could, in turn, expose us to many germs and viruses including coronavirus. Once our finger picks up invisible germs, we can easily transfer them to our body through our nose, mouth, and even by rubbing near our eyes.

Here are some of the ways you should avoid while washing your hands:

1. One of the major reasons for getting sick is not using soap properly 2. After applying soap scrubbing your hand is important else germs won’t go off.

3. Not spending enough time while washing your hands

4. Skipping the final step by not rinsing your hands properly

5. Wet hands are the easiest way to catch germs so why not wait for some seconds and dry them.

History and significance of Global Handwashing Day

Global Handwashing Day was first celebrated in October 2008 in Stockholm, Sweden by the Global Handwashing partnership. The year was surprisingly is also the year of international sanitization. The UN then announced October 15 as Global Handwashing Day.

Handwashing can simply reduce the number of sicknesses amongst children and this can be done by teaching them the importance of handwash:

1. Handwash reduces 20 to 30 per cent risk of getting diarrhoea

2. It also Reduces 29-57% of people suffering from gastrointestinal problems.

3. It helps to Reduce 58% of people suffering from weakened immune systems.

4. Helps in reduce respiratory illnesses and infections by 16-21% The theme of Global handwashing day for this year is “Our future is at hand- let’s move forward together”.
