Burger King drops tomatoes from its wraps and burgers in many Indian outlets

Burger King has removed tomatoes from its wraps and burgers in numerous Indian outlets. Additionally, the American sandwich chain has discontinued its longstanding practice of offering free cheese slices. A surge of almost eight times in tomato prices has been observed in certain cities, including the National Capital Region (NCR). In Delhi, the retail prices of tomatoes have fluctuated between Rs 170 to Rs 200 per kilogram, representing an astonishing increase of over 700% since January 1st. Despite this, the Indian franchisee emphasizes its commitment to maintaining very high standards of quality and assures customers that tomatoes will be reintroduced soon.

The significant price escalation, spurred by supply disruptions resulting from heavy rainfall, has raised concerns among consumers. This has led many households to temporarily exclude tomatoes—a vital ingredient in traditional Indian dishes—from their meals. The sharp rise in tomato, vegetable, and other food prices has contributed to a retail inflation surge, reaching a 15-month high of 7.44% in July.

Data from the National Statistical Office (NSO) reveals that the Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation in the food basket stood at 11.51% in July, a substantial increase from 4.55% in the previous month, and notably higher than the 6.69% recorded in July of the previous year. During July, the annual inflation rates for different categories were as follows: vegetables at 37.44%, spices at 21.63%, pulses and related products at 13.27%, and cereals and their products at 13%.

In response to the skyrocketing tomato prices, the government has introduced new measures to alleviate the burden on the general population. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has instructed cooperatives like Nafed and NCCF to procure tomatoes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra for distribution in major consumption hubs. To address the supply crisis, India has initiated tomato imports from Nepal. Moreover, the government has set up vans to distribute tomatoes at more affordable rates throughout the country, as evidenced by social media posts showing substantial queues.

Tomato Sale: 71,500 Kg of Tomatoes sold for Rs 70 per Kg in Delhi

In an effort to curb the soaring prices of tomatoes, the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF) announced on Monday (August 14) that it had effectively distributed 71,500 kilograms of the vegetable at a subsidized rate during a two-day mega sale event in Delhi.

The sale took place at 70 distinct locations throughout the national capital, including Seelampur and RK Puram, coinciding with Independence Day celebrations. Of the total 71,500 kg of tomatoes, 36,500 kg were sold on August 12, while the remaining 35,000 kg were sold on August 13. On both days, consumers had the opportunity to purchase the vegetable at a reduced rate of Rs 70 per kg.

Due to exorbitant prices, consumers across the country have been compelled to exclude tomatoes from their dietary habits. Notably, since July 11, the NCCF, acting on behalf of the Consumer Affairs Ministry, has been facilitating the sale of tomatoes at discounted rates as a measure to alleviate inflation. The government is of the opinion that its continuous intervention, which has led to increased inventories, has caused prices to decline across all regions in the nation.

Various factors have contributed to the surge in prices, with incessant rains having the most profound impact on inflation. Over recent weeks, prices have escalated from Rs 70-80 per kg to Rs 150-200 per kg due to limited supply caused by crop damage resulting from heavy rainfall and extreme heat. Additionally, experts have noted that this year, fewer tomatoes were cultivated compared to previous years. The shift towards cultivating cash crops like beans was attributed to increased bean prices the previous year. However, due to inadequate rainfall, these crops suffered from drying out and wilting. The restricted availability of vegetables, particularly tomatoes, is a consequence of crop damage caused by a combination of heavy rainfall and extreme heat, as explained by Ajay Kedia, a commodity market expert based in Mumbai.

National Creamsicle Day: Celebrate the day by eating your favourite Orange and Vanilla popsicles

A delightful and gentle flavour adored by children worldwide has been discovered as a solution to beat the summer heat and invigorate them during the scorching months. The initial bite of this treat triumphs over the taste buds, offering a mere hint of the multitude of surprises concealed within this frozen delight. This occasion is none other than National Creamsicle Day, a day of jubilation!

National Creamsicle Day is a dedicated celebration of the delectable fusion of citrus and creamy dessert on a stick, relished by everyone during the warmer seasons. It’s an unmatched method to lower one’s body temperature while the sun radiates its brilliance. While Creamsicle is technically a brand name, it has become a common term used to describe any similar kind of ice cream treat. The original Creamsicle, however, comprises a vanilla ice cream stick enveloped by a layer of frozen orange juice. Though orange was the first flavour, a diverse assortment of alternatives is now available, ranging from strawberry to blueberry and grape.

There’s also a variation known as Dreamsicle, containing ice milk instead of ice cream. The brand has also produced sugar-free pops, low-fat options, and 100-calorie bars. Thus, even if you’re keeping an eye on your diet or following a specific eating regimen, you can still savour a Creamsicle and indulge yourself without hesitation!

Initially conceived by an industrious and inventive 11-year-old named Frank Epperson in 1905, the concept involved enveloping vanilla ice cream with fruit juice. The original creation, known as an Epsicle, later evolved into the Popsicle, Creamsicle, and even Dreamsicle. The earliest versions featured only orange juice on the exterior. However, today, these treats come in a plethora of flavours, including orange, blue raspberry, lime, grape, cherry, and blueberry.

This icy delight has been a mainstay of summer ice cream trucks since their inception and has been enjoyed in various warm locations as a delightful treat. People have ventured far and wide to sample different variations of creamsicles from various regions and localities. Notably, the creamsicles served on Long Island emphasize robust vanilla over orange, while those found in Florida’s Palm Beach offer a modest dose of vanilla flavour paired with an exuberant burst of orange.
