History of Ramadan
For those who don’t know, Ramadan is derived from the Arabic roots ramida a or ar-ramad, which both mean scorching heat. During the Holy Month of Roza, which lasts for four weeks and two days, Muslims all across the world observe fast. Fasting is not required for those who are very unwell, pregnant, suffering from a severe ailment, or who are having menstruation. This time is devoted to the Holy Quran and its recitation. Fasting takes place between dawn and dusk, with the reward of ‘Thawab,’ which, according to tradition, doubles during Ramzan.
Significance of Ramadan
Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan has a special meaning. Roza is kept for a full month. Fasting for a month has the spiritual objective of understanding the anguish of hunger and thirst, as well as surrendering souls to the Almighty. The holy Quran is claimed to have been revealed to mankind on the wonderful night of Laylat al-Qadr presented to Prophet Muhammed during the holy month of Ramadan.
