World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2022

World Day for Safety and Health at Work is celebrated every year on 28th of April. The day promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally for safety and health at the workplace. It is an awareness-raising campaign aimed at bringing international attention to the magnitude of the problem and how promoting and creating a safety and health culture can help reduce the number of work-related deaths and injuries that can be found.

Every year since 2003 on 28 April, the United Nations, through the International Labor Organization (ILO) has been guiding nations to celebrate World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

Government is responsible for providing the infrastructure, laws, and services which is necessary to ensure that workers remain employable and enterprises thrives. This includes the development of a national policy and program and a system of oversight to enforce compliance with occupational safety and health legislation and policy.

History of World Day for Safety and Health at Work

World Day for Safety and Health at Work was first observed in the year 2003 by the International Labor Organization. That year, the International Labor Organization (ILO) began celebrating World Day for Safety and Health at Work to emphasize the prevention of accidents and diseases at the workplace.

Over the years, the day has become an important tool to raise awareness of how to make work safe, healthy and the need to raise the political profile of occupational safety and health. April 28 is also the International Day of Commemoration for the Dead and Injured Workers.

Theme of World Day for Safety and Health at Work

‘Act together to build a positive safety and health culture,’ is the theme for this year’s World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2022. This subject emphasizes the need of encouraging employers to have a strong workplace health and safety culture in which everyone contributes to a safe and healthy workplace.

Emerging Risks at Work :

New and emerging occupational risks may be due to technological innovation or social or organizational change, such as new technologies and production processes such as nanotechnology, and biotechnology. Also, new working conditions such as higher workloads, reduced work intensity, poor migration conditions for jobs in the informal economy.

Importance of World Day for Safety and Health at Work

Safety in the workplace is still a bourgeois concept in many parts of the world. This is because, in some places, the value of human life outweighs the demands in this industrialized, mass-producing world. Therefore, the annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work highlights the importance of occupational safety and health.

It is worth noting that the motivation to maintain good standards of safety and health is spread equally across all sectors of society. This means that for policymakers, it is their responsibility to frame laws and regulations that ensure employment. For employers, it is their duty to ensure that the work environment is safe and healthy. Employees are responsible for working safely and prioritizing their health.
