World Photography Day

The invention of the daguerreotype, a photographic technique created by Louis Daguerre in 1837, is remembered on World Photography Day as a crucial turning point in the development of photography. The day is devoted to the photography’s science and art.

World Photography Day honours the French Academy of Sciences’ official presentation of the daguerreotype method on August 19, 1839. One of the earliest techniques for permanently recording images on a light-sensitive surface was the daguerreotype procedure.

The first photography method, the Daguerreotype, was invented in 1837 by the Frenchmen Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce, and this is when the day got its start. The method was disclosed by the French Academy of Sciences on January 9, 1839. Later that year, the French government bought the patent for the discovery and gifted it free to the world.

Although it is believed that the first digital photograph was taken in 1957, 20 years before the first digital camera, the earliest durable colour photograph was actually shot in the year 1861.

World Photography Day promotes photography as an active art form and encourages photographers to try out new methods, arrangements, and aesthetics. It inspires individuals to recognise the value of photography as a tool for memory preservation, storytelling, and emotion capture.

On this day, photographers and photography lovers typically share their favourite shots, the stories behind the photos, and insights into their creative processes. It is a day to discuss the technical aspects of photography, equipment improvements, and the evolution of photographic approaches.

Around the world, photographers and photography devotees mark the day by snapping pictures, posting them on social media, and taking part in photography-related activities. On World Photography Day, a number of photography exhibitions, workshops, and competitions are held to highlight the skills of photographers, reflect on the importance of their profession, and highlight the role that photography plays in preserving history, culture, and individual experiences.

This year the theme for World Photography Day is Landscape.
