Viraat sails into sunset

The world’s longest-serving aircraft carrier, INS Viraat, was decommissioned on March 6. The fate of the 27,800-tonne warship is now unknown. As it has found no buyers, it will probably be scrapped just as its predecessor, INS Vikrant, was in 2014
Viraat was commissioned in 1959, after being laid down in 1944 following WWII. It was re-inducted into the Royal Navy as HMS Hermes. Decommissioned in 1984, it was sold to India in 1987
Viraat was commissioned into the Indian Navy on May 12, 1987, and served for almost 30 years
On July 23, 2016, Viraat sailed for the last time under her own power from Mumbai to Kochi, where she was dry-docked and prepared for decommissioning
India currently has only one fully operational aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya commissioned in 2013. It was earlier Russia’s Admiral Gorshkov, bought by India for $2.3 billion. Two other indigenous aircraft carriers are yet to be fully commissioned. Goodbye Viraat!
