AAP marks debut in Lok Sabha with Jalandhar bypoll win

Attacking the BJP, Kejriwal said AAP seeks votes only for the work which they do for the public, and in return the people trust them and help their party to win.

The Aam Aadmi Party marked its debut in the Lok Sabha bypoll from Jalandhar with its candidate Sushil Kumar Rinku beating Congress candidate Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary by a margin of 58,691 votes.

Hailing Rinku’s victory, a feat for AAP, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal credited the Bhagwant Mann government in Punjab. He said he appreciated the hard work put in by the Punjab CM and AAP workers.

Attacking the BJP, Kejriwal said AAP seeks votes only for the work which they do for the public, and in return the people trust them and help their party to win.

In his reaction, Bhagwant Mann said this win has boosted the confidence of the party and party workers to motivate them to put in good work. Mann said this victory was a stamp of confidence given by the people of Punjab.

The Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat has been with the Congress for a long time but with this win, AAP has ended the Congress domination. The seat fell vacant after the death of MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary, whose widow was the Congress candidate in the bypoll.

Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary came second for the Congress, the Shiromani Akali Dal came third and the BJP was at fourth position, respectively.

Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring congratulated the Aam Aadmi Party and winning candidate Sushil Rinku Singh in a tweet. Warring also thanked Congress workers for their hard work in the Lok Sabha bypoll.

The Punjab AAP government has been roundly criticised for its lax security and law order in the state, especially in the Sidhu Moosewala murder and the resurgence of pro-Khalistani sentiment in the state.

Further, AAP’s Delhi government has been under the scanner of investigative agencies with senior leaders in jail. But the party can now breathe a sigh of relief that voters in Jalandhar didn’t punish its candidate. But what a lone member can do for the party is anybody’s question.

Suvendu Adhikari is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, becoming the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party to head the state government.

The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata and is expected to witness the presence of several senior BJP leaders and supporters from across the state.

Adhikari was unanimously elected as the BJP legislature party leader after the party secured a decisive victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. His appointment marks a significant political change in the state, where the BJP is forming the government for the first time.

The development comes days after the BJP secured a decisive victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, ending the Trinamool Congress’ long rule in the state. Party leaders met in the presence of senior central leadership to finalise the chief ministerial face ahead of the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 9.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah attended the legislature party meeting where Adhikari’s name was formally announced. Reports said the BJP leadership backed him after he emerged as the party’s strongest face in Bengal politics over the past few years.

Adhikari played a major role in the BJP’s campaign across the state and remained one of the party’s most aggressive leaders against the ruling Trinamool Congress. He also defeated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur during the Assembly elections, strengthening his position within the party.

The BJP’s victory is being viewed as a major political shift in West Bengal, where the party is set to form its first government. Adhikari, once a senior Trinamool Congress leader, had joined the BJP before the 2021 Assembly elections and later became Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly.

The BJP legislature party is scheduled to meet in Kolkata to elect its leader, a decision that is expected to formally determine the next Chief Minister. Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached Kolkata ahead of the meeting and is overseeing the selection process.

Sources cited in media reports suggest the new BJP-led government may also appoint two deputy chief ministers, a post that has remained vacant in West Bengal for nearly two decades.
