Punjab Congress crisis may end soon, Amarinder Singh to remain CM, Sidhu to be Punjab Congress chief

Punjab Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu is likely to be appointed the chief of the Congress’ state unit as the party makes all possible efforts to quell the infighting that has endangered its campaign for next year’s assembly election.

Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who has been engaged in a war of words with Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, is likely to be appointed as chief of the Congress’ Punjab unit shortly.

Putting an end to the ongoing crisis in Punjab, both Amarinder and Sidhu have agreed on a new formula, in which, Captain Amarinder Singh will remain the chief minister of Punjab while Sidhu will be the president of Punjab Congress.

A formal announcement on the development is expected soon.

Punjab Congress will also have two working presidents from the Hindu and Dalit communities. Sidhu will replace Sunil Jakkar. Representation of Dalits was one of the demands put forward by MLAs last month to the three-member committee set up by party chief Sonia Gandhi to resolve this issue. The committee met both leaders as part of its deliberations.

This development comes days after the Congress have made all possible efforts to quell the infighting that has endangered its campaign for next year’s assembly election.

There were indications of a possible resolution this week as Sidhu had attacked the Punjab CM over power crisis and 2015 case of police firing unlike the earlier one, this was reserved for the Congress’ rivals – the Akali Dal and AAP. This also seemed to play out recently when Sidhu praised the Arvind Kejriwal-led outfit Aam Aadmi Party.

In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Sidhu said AAP has always recognised his vision and work for Punjab. He also tagged an old news clip when he had resigned from the BJP and reports had indicated that he could join the AAP. Within minutes of the tweet, the top brass of the Congress was left confused with some of them interpreting it as his subtle appreciation of the AAP.

Sidhu’s recent attacks include swipes at the Punjab CM over the power crisis and 2015 case involving the desecration of the Sikh religious text Guru Granth Sahib and police firing during peaceful protests.

While the Sidhu camp has been pressing for a change of guard in Punjab government, CM Amarinder Singh recently met the Congress brass in Delhi and said that he will abide by the decision of the leadership.

The meeting assumed significance as the Congress high command has been trying to resolve the internal rift in the Punjab unit with just months to go for the assembly polls.

Wrestlers left to grapple with Delhi Police might, march fails, Jantar Mantar cleared

The Delhi Police on Sunday cleared the protest area occupied by protesting wrestlers in Jantar Mantar after detaining several wrestlers, including women, on their march to the new Parliament building which was being inaugurated at that time.

The wrestlers had called for a mahila samman mahapanchayat with support from farmers and khap panchayats from various states. With Delhi Police declaring the area around Parliament a no-go zone in view of the ceremonies there today, the wrestlers were not allowed to proceed on their march from Jantar Mantar.

The wrestlers, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, were detained at Jantar Mantar when the protesters tried to clear the barricades and ended up breaking them.

Videos on Twitter showed a brawl between protesters and Delhi Police personnel as the latter tried to break up the altercation. A woman police officer can be seen taking a woman away from the protest scene in one of the videos.

Unfazed, Punia declared the mahapanchayat will take place today without fail. He said the wrestlers would continue their struggle for their self-respect. The Olympian bronze medallist said the Modi government was destroying democracy on the very same day it was inaugurating a new Parliament. He urged the authorities to free protesters who had been detained by police.

The borders into Delhi had been shut since the morning over the mahapanchayat timing with the Parliament inauguration. Traffic jams were legion along the peripheries of the city as farmers in tractors were refused entry into Delhi, leading to a long pile-up of traffic.

The wrestlers have been on protest since April 23 seeking action against Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the MP from Kaiserganj and a UP strongman, for sexually harassing women athletes.

The wrestlers have won widespread support from farmers who have now stepped in to seek justice for the exploited women.
