Anupam Hazra and Mamata Banerjee

The Trinamool Congress has filed a police complaint against newly-appointed BJP National Secretary Anupam Hazra for his comment that he would hug West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee if he gets the coronavirus disease.

The complaint was filed by the ruling party’s Siliguri unit after Hazra made the comments at a public event while criticising Mamata Banerjee for her measures of handling coronavirus. The programme was held in South 24 Parganas district on Sunday evening, PTI reported.

The Trinamool Congress accused Hazra of making insulting remarks against the head of a state and sought action against him for maligning a woman public figure. Hazra, a former Trinamool MP who joined the BJP last year, said his party workers are fighting a bigger enemy than coronavirus. They are fighting Mamata Banerjee, he said. When his party representatives have been able to fight Banerjee without a mask, they can also fight Covid-19 without wearing a mask, PTI quoted him as saying.

He said he has decided that if he gets infected with the coronavirus, then he will go and hug Mamata Banerjee. Hazra targeted the chief minister for the manner in which bodies of Covid-19 casualties were being cremated. The way her government treated victims of the disease was pathetic, he said. Hazra said the bodies were doused with kerosene and set afire. Sons and daughters were not allowed to see the face of their parents. Even dead cats and dogs are treated nicely, said Hazra.

Senior Trinamool Congress leader and MP Saugata Roy condemned Hazra’s comment and called it insane. He said such words and statements can only come from BJP leaders.

Reacting to the complaint, Hazra said that even Banerjee had made derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Meanwhile, the state BJP leadership distanced itself from Hazra’s comment.
