Senior Janata Dal (United) leader Sharad Yadav was sacked as party’s leader in the Rajya Sabha on Saturday for his public disapproval of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar’s decision to quit the Mahagathbandhan and re-join the BJP led alliance.

A delegation of party’s Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha members submitted a letter to vice president Venkaiah Naidu declaring Ramchandra Prasad Singh the party’s new leader in the Rajya Sabha.

“He [Sharad Yadav] has not been removed from the JD(U), only replaced with RCP Singh [as party leader in the Rajya Sabha]. This was important due to Yadav’s recent actions,” party leader Vasishtha Narayana said.

According to sources, RCP Singh will also head the party’s parliamentary party.

Yadav is disgruntled over Nitish’s decision to break ties with Mahagathbandhan and that too without informing him once. Yadav is presently travelling through Bihar to interact with people and chart a new possible course.

The rift between Yadav and Kumar widened after the Gujarat Rajya Sabha election when Yadav’s loyalist and party’s lone MLA voted for Congress candidate Ahmed Patel instead of BJP candidate.

In a related development, BJP president Amit Shah on Friday formally invited Nitish Kumar to join the National Democratic Alliance. Actor-turned-politician Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar again on Thursday as his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), continued efforts to prove it has enough support to form the next government in the state.

TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly after winning 108 seats, but it remains short of the majority mark of 118.

The Congress has extended support to TVK, adding five MLAs to Vijay’s side. However, the alliance still needs additional backing from other parties or independents to comfortably cross the halfway mark.

According to reports, the Governor has not yet been fully convinced that TVK currently has the required numbers to form a stable government. This has delayed clarity over the swearing-in ceremony and the formal invitation to form the government.
