BJP leader Kausar Jahan, Thursday, was elected as the chairperson of the Delhi Haj Committee chairperson, wresting control of the body from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), for the first time, since the Arvind Kejriwal-led party was voted into power in the national capital.
Kausar Jahan, who became the second woman to be elected to the post, received three of the five votes cast by the committee members in the election held at the Delhi Secretariat.
The Delhi Haj Committee is comprised for six member, two each from the AAP and the BJP—including MP Gautam Gambhir—Muslim theology expert Mohammad Saad and Congress councilor Nazia Danish.
In a statement, Delhi BJP working president Virendra Sachdeva lauded Kausar Jahan’s victory saying that her election displays the growing trust and faith of Muslims in the BJP.

In a tweet, Sachdeva while extending congratulations to Kausar, asserted that the election of a BJP candidate for such a post has made it clear that Muslims are now ready to join the nation’s development stream under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Kausar received three votes from Saad, Gambhir and herself while Danish abstained from voting. AAP MLAs Abdul Rehman and Haji Yunus are also members of the committee.
Muslims across the globe converge each year on Mecca for the annual Haj pilgrimage deemed mandatory in Islam for every Muslim to undertake at least once in their lifetime.
The Haj committee issue became a point of contention between Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP and Lieutenant Governor of the national capital after the LG announced members of the Delhi Haj Committee that included a Congress councillor.
The AAP slammed the appointments, claiming an alleged BJP-Congress nexus ahead of MCD mayoral polls.
Kejriwal dubbed the notification as “illegal”, claiming that his government was not consulted before the announcements and the correct process was sidelined.
