Delhi Police arrests journalist Mohammed Zubair for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, inciting riots

Delhi Police on Monday arrested Alt News journalist and fact checker Mohammed Zubair for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, promoting enmity and inciting riots.
The Alt News co-founder has been arrested by Special Cell of Delhi under Sections 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot-if rioting be committed-if not committed) and 295A (Outraging religious feelings of any class) of the Indian Penal Code.
No FIR copy is being served to his fact checking website Alt News despite repeated requests, Pratik Sinha, the founder of the Alt News tweeted. Mohammed Zubair was called to Delhi for questioning in a different case but arrested in this one. Mandatory notice was not given, Sinha alleged.
Police, however, said Zubair had joined the investigation in this case, registered at the Special Cell police station, and was arrested after having sufficient evidence on record. He is still being questioned and police will present him before a magistrate tomorrow to seek further custody, it is learnt.
Zubair had been under attack from several Hindu right groups since he had widely circulated hate speeches of Hindu priests- Yati Narsinghanand, Mahant Bajrang Muni and Anand Swaroop.
The Delhi Police had already filed two cases against Zubai in September 2020 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act for allegedly harassing and torturing a minor girl.
