Congress and several opposition parties have cited the coronavirus pandemic and floods in various parts of the country to demand that the JEE and NEET examinations must be deferred, even as the Centre has made it clear the exams will be held as per schedule with due precautions.

Congress Rahul Gandhi on Friday tweeted, “Unite your voice with lakhs of suffering students. #SpeakUpForStudentSafety from 10am onwards. Let’s make the Govt listen to the students,” he urged. The former Congress president also tagged a video about the people’s movement, talking about the issues students are going to face if the entrance exams for admission to engineering and medical colleges across the country are held.

“The government is putting the students’ health at risk by conducting the NEET, JEE exams amid pandemic. Students have been stressed out. During such time, the Congress stands with the students and we are speaking up for their safety,” according to the voiceover in the video.

The JEE Main and NEET-UG will be conducted in September as scheduled, officials of the ministry of education has said amid a growing chorus for postponing the crucial tests in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. While the JEE Main is scheduled from September 1-6, NEET is planned on September 13. Around 8.58 lakh candidates have registered for JEE-Main and 15.97 lakh have registered for NEET.

Several other opposition leaders, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, her Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik and DMK president MK Stalin have demanded that the exams be postponed. Banerjee and Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh have even called for approaching the Supreme Court in the matter.

The government, on its part, has said that more than 1.7 million candidates have already downloaded their admit cards for JEE and NEET, which shows students want the exams to be conducted.

The exams have been deferred twice in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The JEE-Mains was originally scheduled to be held from April 7 to April 11, but was postponed to July 18-23. The NEET-UG was originally scheduled for May 3 but was pushed to July 26.

The Supreme Court last week dismissed a plea seeking postponement of the two exams amid a spurt in the number of Covid-19 cases in the country, saying a “precious” academic year of students “cannot be wasted” and that life has to go on.

The chief minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar on Wednesday, went to inaugurate a ‘digital library’ in Banka district where he noticed the language of the signboard of the newly established ‘digital library’ and asked the officials to change the signboard as the information was written in the English language.

CM Kumar said he respects the English language but  Hindi is a part of the tradition. He further schooled the officials saying you are ending the importance of the Hindi language, adding that it is our language. Officials present at the moment were asked to change the board by CM Kumar.

In March, Kumar made headlines for ridiculing a farmer who used English words in his speech at an event, demonstrating his consistent disapproval of the use of English in public settings.

Nitish Kumar reminded the farmer that using smartphones during COVID-19 was causing people to distance themselves from their own language in Bharat, Bihar.

Look at what has happened to people. They are distancing themselves from their language, Kumar interrupted, when people learn words through smartphones. Is it England, Kumar questioned the farmer. Your language should be used since you have been conversing with farmers in Bihar and Bharat, Nitish Kumar said.

As per the reports, the Chief Minister of Bihar carried out unannounced inspections at several government offices and discovered that a considerable number of ministers from his cabinet were missing in action. The observations revealed that while the majority of the ministers belonging to his party, JD(U), were present, a significant number of ministers from his alliance party, RJD, were found to be absent, the reports added.

According to reports, the development occurred amidst speculations that CM Kumar may switch alliances and join the BJP.

During the G20 event, the Prime Minister cordially introduced Nitish Kumar to none other than the esteemed US President Joe Biden.

It was worth noting that this was the initial encounter between PM Modi and Nitish Kumar following the latter’s party, JD(U), ending its affiliation with the BJP last year. Instead, they joined the Mahagathbandhan and formed a government with RJD and other opposition parties.
