Supreme Court asks EC to decide by May 6 complaints of poll code violations by Modi, Shah

The Supreme Court (SC) today (Thursday, May 2) told the Election Commission (EC) to decide pending complaints of Model Code of Conduct violations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah before it hears the matter again on May 6.

The Congress had filed its first complaint against Modi and Shah on April 5. The next phase of the Lok Sabha elections is scheduled to be held on May 6.

The EC told the SC bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi that it has already decided on two out of the 11 complaints which were filed by the Congress party against Modi and Shah.

The EC had yesterday given a second clean chit to PM Modi on the complaint against his appeal to first-time voters by invoking the Balakot airstrikes in Latur, Maharashtra on April 9.

Earlier, the poll watchdog had on Tuesday ruled that Modi’s speech in Maharashtra’s Wardha, in which he had questioned Rahul Gandhi’s decision to contest from Wayanad in Kerala, did not violate the model code.

At a rally in Wardha on April 1, Modi had claimed that the Congress had been forced to contest from places dominated by the minority community because it had insulted the Hindus, an apparent reference to Hindutva terror cases, after the accused in Samjhauta train blast were let off by the trial court due to botched up investigation.

Modi had said: “The Congress insulted Hindus. People have decided to punish it in the election. Leaders of that party are now scared of contesting from constituencies dominated by the majority (Hindu) population. That is why they are forced to take refuge in places where the majority is a minority.”

After this, the Congress lashed out at the Election Commission saying that the model code of conduct has become the ‘Modi Code of Conduct’.

“Disappointed that the PM of India is permitted to go scot-free after rampant violation of Article 324 & MCC. There cannot be two sets of laws for Modiji & the rest of the country,” party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted.

Today in Supreme Court, senior advocate AM Singhvi, appearing for Congress Lok Sabha MP Sushmita Dev, who has filed a petition in the apex court on the issue, said that they have given 11 representations to EC against the duo but it has taken decision on only two.

“The remaining representations of the petitioners shall be decided by the Election Commission before we hear the matter again on Monday (May 6),” said the SC bench.

Priyanka Gandhi asks for how long will BJP keep blaming Congress

Priyanka Gandhi today addressed public rally in Ramnagar, Uttarakhand, where she asked BJP that for how long they will keep blaming Congress

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday responded to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s frequently made accusation that nothing happened in the country during the decades the grand-old party ruled, claiming the party is being responsible despite having been out of office for the last ten years

How long will you continue blaming Congress? Priyanka said, the Congress has not been in power for the last ten years, during a public rally in Ramnagar, Uttarakhand.

She said, the BJP has had a complete majority in government for the last 10 years, but they now claim that they want 400 paar, or an even larger majority. They claim that in 75 years, nothing has changed. Priyanka said, in Uttarakhand, the home of IITs, IIMs, and AIIMS, how have these capabilities grown if nothing has changed? Was it feasible that Chandrayaan landed on the moon if Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru hadn’t constructed these? she continued.

Priyanka criticised the Modi government for abandoning youth who put in a lot of effort to enlist in the Army, using the contentious Agniveer project as an example.

The Congress leader said, in his speech, Prime Minister Modi mentioned soldiers, but who introduced the Agniveer scheme? A sense of patriotism drives thousands of young people to dedicate years of their lives to enlisting in the army. They believe that by continuing in their work, they will support both their parents and the nation. But by introducing a plan like Agniveer, Modi ji broke the dreams of the youth, she claimed.

She further claimed that PM Modi and the BJP had abandoned Devbhoomi (Uttarakhand) after the  terrible disaster.

Priyanka took aim at the Prime Minister, by saying that he believes everyone is corrupt while he is not. They have forgotten about jobs and inflation because they are too preoccupied with using the ED, CBI, and IT to win over leaders to their party and overthrow the government. The question of accepting donations and conducting business came to light once the electoral bond was disclosed, she added.

Earlier this month, the Congress party presented its Nyay Patra, or Lok Sabha election manifesto. Among other things, it calls for a minimum support price (MSP) for farmers crops.
