Congress rejects Shiv Sena’s (UBT) 23-seat proposal in Maharashtra for Lok Sabha election

The Congress has turned down the proposal of its ally Shiv Sena (UBT) for 23 seats in Maharashtra in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The development occurred following a meeting of politicians to negotiate seat sharing for the Lok Sabha elections among the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi partners, the Congress, the NCP, and the Shiv Sena (UBT).

Divided into two factions, the Shiv Sena claimed 23 out of 48 seats in Maharashtra, even though most of its members supported Eknath Shinde. Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam stated that Uddhav Thackeray’s wing of the Shiv Sena faces a big struggle because it doesn’t have enough candidates because of the party’s rift.

Following cracks in the Shiv Sena and Sharad Pawar’s NCP, Congress members at the conference made it plain that the grand old party appeared to be the only one with a stable vote share in the state.

Sanjay Nirupam advised leaders to stay out of disputes when vying for seats. Shiv Sena might call for 23 seats, but how would they use them? Leaders of the Shiv Sena have departed, creating a problem. For Shiv Sena, there is a dearth of candidates, he said.

Prior to the most recent meeting of the Opposition bloc INDIA, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, as well as AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, had discussions with Sanjay Raut, the MP for Shiv Sena (UBT), and party leaders Uddhav and Aaditya Thackeray.

Raut remained silent over the number of seats that the NCP and Congress would run for.

The BJP-led NDA coalition in 2019 included the Shiv Sena in its entirety. The Congress and the NCP have joined the Uddhav Thackeray-led party in the MVA.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government headed by Uddhav Thackeray collapsed in June 2022 after Eknath Shinde and forty other MLAs rose up against the Shiv Sena leadership. This caused a rift within the party.

Shinde then collaborated with the BJP to establish the state government.

Abdullah while speaking to the media said Rahul Gandhi is putting the most spirited fights in the Lok Sabha elections. The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said this election for the people of Jammu and Kashmir is a first in many respects. It is the first election for them as a Union Territory. He further added that it is the first time an election is taking place for them after the momentous events of August 5, 2019, when Article 370 was removed. He said this is the first instance when an election is being fought in Jammu and Kashmir after its status was changed from a state to a union territory.

Abdullah questioned why have the people of Jammu and Kashmir been deprived of democracy? Abdullah asked what was their crime? He said the status and relationship of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the Union has been altered without any consultation with the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
