Panellists feel there is need to get rid of criminals and accused leaders should be tried in fast-track courts, but who will bell the system?
The Supreme Court has declared that political parties will have to display the criminal antecedents of those contesting an election on their ticket on their websites. APN’s popular debate, Mudda, took up the issue. Anchorperson Anant Tyagi asked questions to panellists including NCP’s Nawab Malik, Congress’ Ajay Verma, SP’s Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan, BJP’s Rajesh Jha and APN consultant Govind Pant Raju.
Raju said: “It is often found that rules are different for the common man and the political bosses. Political parties look after their own self-interest only.”
Malik said: “Miscreants often misuse the law and get into politics. Such acts should be stopped.”
Verma said: “In every SC verdict, there are merits and demerits. We must examine the issue in totality and make a distinction between petty criminals and serious criminals.”
Chauhan said: “Entry of miscreants in politics is a pan-systemic problem. All parties must get together to clean up our political system.”
Malik said: “Fast-track courts should help eliminate criminals from politics.”
Jha said: “We need to keep criminals out to weed out corruption from the political system.”
Raju said: “Parties should get together to stop criminals from entering politics.”
Malik said: “As per the Representation of Peoples Act, the common man can fight elections, but those who are convicted cannot. The problem of the presence of MPs and MLAs facing charges exists. The chief minister of Uttar Pradesh faces charges, and so do so many other BJP ministers. Goonda and gangsters should not get tickets, but if people are caught in a political net, and slapped politically motivated charges, you cannot deny them tickets.”
Verma said: “There is a difference between heinous crimes and petty crimes. SC guidelines are there to keep criminals out of politics.”
Jha said: “Today’s verdict is welcome. However, even if we were to start a debate on this topic, Congress won’t join in as they can’t stop talking about Rafale. In 2019, let’s see how many parties back how many criminals.”
Justice AN Mittal said: “Fast track courts are there to solve cases. The maximum time-frame should be one year to solve such cases. Those facing serious criminal charges should not be allowed to get the party ticket till a verdict giving them a clean chit is out.”
Raju said: “The Supreme Court verdict is a step forward.”
Jha said: “The point is that people with a criminal bent of mind usually start making the rounds of political parties before an election. We must clean up politics, and push such cases through fast track courts.”
Malik said: “Even those who win can be removed if criminal charges are proved. “
Raju said:”After an FIR is lodged, a government official is suspended. But politicians are a different breed.”
Justice Mittal said: “Government officials are suspended if found guilty. But in case of an MLA or an MP, even the constable serving the warrant is scared.”
