As if the unrest surrounding Pakistan’s cricket following a disappointing World Cup campaign couldn’t get much worse, a purported internet conversation between captain Babar Azam and a PCB official has sent the whole country into disarray.
The exchange between Babar and PCB’s Chief Operating Officer, Salman Naseer, was captured during one of the talk shows on the channel ARY News, despite the fact that the original source is unverified.
The entire fiasco began when Pakistan lost four straight games, sending them to the verge of elimination from the World Cup. After the matches ended disastrously, there were reports circulating that Babar would be removed as captain, which only served to fan the flames.
The PCB then made a subtly suggestive statement about Babar’s imminent dismissal in an official announcement, saying that the board will make decisions that are best for Pakistan cricket. This had a knock-on effect that shocked the Pakistan cricket community as a whole.
When former captain Rashid Latif disclosed that players haven’t received pay in five months and that the PCB isn’t answering Babar’s calls, the chaotic situation was stoked even more. This served as a spark, resulting in the leak of the WhatsApp conversation in which Naseer asks Babar to confirm whether he really called the board.
Barbar, there’s also this rumour going around on social media and TV that you’ve been phoning the chairman and he hasn’t returned your calls. Have you lately given him a call?” The Pakistani captain was seen asking Salman, to whom he responded, Salam Salman bhai! Maine toh sir ko call nahi kara, which translates, greetings Salman! I did not make any such calls to sir.
The speculations may have stopped once Babar made his latest remark, but the bigger mystery still stands as to how, why, and under what conditions his private discussion with a board official ended up on TV. Former Pakistani captain and pacer Waqar Younis was furious after seeing this film, blasting the station and labelling the behaviour as pitiful.
Wasim said, what are you guys attempting to prove, and how do you know that? This is really sad. Are you folks satisfied now, Khush ho gaye aap log? Please don’t bother Babar Azam, he wrote on X.
Even the former batter and captain of Pakistan, Azhar Ali, who was present during the talk that was broadcast live for the globe to watch, questioned and denounced the channel’s reckless actions.
