BCCI unofficially retires No 10 jersey in honor of Sachin Tendulkar?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Since Sachin’s retirement in 2013, the No 10 jersey had only been worn by pacer Shardul Thakur – who was trolled on social media for his choice.

With cricketers from the Men in Blue squad refusing to wear the No 10 jersey worn by legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar, the jersey might now unofficially be a patent of the cricketing great. Reportedly, the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) claimed that players of India’s national squad are not ready to wear the celebrated jersey out of respect for Sachin.

However, the cricketing board has not yet disclosed any plans to officially retire the jersey with the number 10.

Speaking to the media, a BCCI official said, “It’s a very individual choice. If players don’t want to wear a certain number, one can’t force them. ICC might just tell you that a team can’t officially retire a jersey but it would never tell you that it’s mandatory to wear that number.”

“The BCCI has not taken any such call (retiring the No.10 jersey). It’s a very informal thing among players. Also you don’t want young players to be abused like it happened with Shardul Thakur,” he added.

Since Sachin’s retirement in 2013, the jersey he worn throughout his international cricketing career had only been worn by Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur – when the 26-year-old made his debut during India’s tour to Sri Lanka earlier in 2017.

With Thakur’s decision to pick the jersey of the legendary cricketer, fans of Sachin trolled the young pacer on social networking platforms for his choice. Though Thakur later came up with an explanation and cited numerological reasons for selection the number 10.

Though there are no such examples of retiring a jersey in the honor of a cricketer in international cricket, Indian Premier League (IPL) team Mumbai Indians had earlier retired the no 10 shirt to display respect towards the batting genius.

Even in international football, retiring of a jersey has never been witnessed – though clubs have often done that in honor of iconic players. For instance, Italian club Napoli had retired the No 10 jersey worn by Argentinean football great Maradona.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
