ENG vs NZ: Ben Stokes to begin new era of England Cricket, will he be able to fill Joe Root’s shoes? Here’s what tweeple say
The new England Captain Ben Stokes is has led his team against Kane Williamson’s New Zealand at Lords. Seeing Joe Root playing just as a batsman and not the skipper, Tweeple got reminded of his unbeaten records.
Ben Stokes has commenced the new ear of England cricket by taking over the Test captaincy after Joe Root’s resignation. However, it won’t be easy for Ben to lead the England team. Firstly, because Joe Root has left an impeccable body of work and records as he was the most successful Test captain of England, with a record of most wins.
Secondly, because the initiator of cricket sport recently has failed to live up to the mark and has failed miserably. Hence, good and bad both records are after Ben Stokes. However, the new skipper is in a much more relaxed space of mind and doesn’t seem to be bothered by either.
What Twitter says?
Be it the critiques or cricket fans, both have high hopes from Ben Stokes. And embarking to this new journey as the next Test Captain of England, Ben Stokes is leading his team against his birthplace, New Zealand cricket team at Lords. The test series also marks the debut of Brendon McCullum as the new coach of England cricket team.
Tweeple seem to be pretty impressed with Ben Stokes approach towards the game. Several former cricketers have also shown hope in Ben Stokes and England cricket fans have asked Stokes to live up to the expectations.
Joe Root as a captain
Joe Root was appointed as the captain of the England test team after Alastair Cook’s resignation in 2017. He holds the record for most wins (27 games) as an England captain in the longest format of cricket. However, despite being the most successful England captain Joe Root had to face several defeats in recent time.

Delhi Capitals were set to bat first, Pant (88 not out of 43 deliveries) and Axar Patel (66 off 43 deliveries) scored half centuries to take Delhi Capitals to 224 for 4. Rishabh Pant hit an unbeaten 88 as Delhi Capitals beat Gujarat Titans by 4 runs in the Indian Premier League 2024 match at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday. Delhi Capitals were set to bat first, Pant (88 not out of 43 deliveries) and Axar Patel (66 off 43 deliveries) scored half centuries to take Delhi Capitals to 224 for 4.
In reply, Sai Sudarshan (65 off 29 ) and David Miller (55 off 23) scored half centuries but were not able to take Gujarat Titans over the line, as the GT finished at 220 runs after losing 8 wickets in their 20 overs. Earlier, Axar Patel and Rishabh Pant forged a 113-run partnership to steady the innings after medium pacer Sandeep Warrier (3/15) ran through the batting line up of Delhi Capitals. Captain Rishabh Pant was in his element scoring as many as 8 sixes and 5 fours. Tristan Stubbs quickfired 26 runs off 7 deliveries.
Rashid Khan’s explosive batting did not prove to be enough for Gujarat Titans, as it is Delhi Capitals who emerged as winners in this last-over thriller match by just 4 runs. David Miller and Rashid Khan’s batting brilliance in the death overs, almost took Gujarat Titans the full distance, but the 225 run target just proved to be too much for the Shubman Gill-led side.
DC bowlers started off the match with quite some promise, but their lack of grit in the death overs continued to be the negative highlight in the ongoing season of IPL. Despite the 2 dropped catches, the fielding was absolutely top-notch from DC in this match, specifically from the likes of, Axar Patel, Tristan Stubbs and Jake Fraser McGurk. Gujarat Titans’s top-order woes have yet again come to haunt them, which will push them to come up with a better game plan before they head further into the more intense stages of IPL 2024.
