The BCCI on Saturday announced that white-ball skipper Rohit Sharma will lead the team India squad for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka while Jasprit Bumrah was named his deputy.
Team India’s selection Committee chairman Chetan Sharma said that there was no discussion on Rohit’s appointment and that he was a clear choice. Rohit will be the captain of the Indian cricket team going forward in Tests unless he is not fit or unavailable for some reason, he said.
Virat Kohli, who has returned home on Saturday morning, a day after scoring a half-century in the second T20I against West Indies, will return for the Test matches against Sri Lanka. He will miss the T20I series against Sri Lanka while Rishabh Pant will miss the entire tour along with Shardul Thakur.
Pant and Kohli scored crucial half-centuries to set up India’s thrilling win over the West Indies in the second T20I of the 3-match series.
The middle-order batters Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane will not be the part of team India against Sri Lanka while all-rounder Washington Sundar and opener KL Rahul will also miss the entire home series against Sri Lanka unless they recover early.
However, Ravichandran Ashwin has been included in the Test squad but his participation in the series will be subject to fitness clearance, Chetan Sharma said.
The first Test against Sri Lanka begins on March 4 in Mohali while the second Test will be a day-night affair in Bengaluru from March 12 onwards.
After the latest development in team India’s captaincy, Rohit Sharma has replaced Virat Kohli as Test captain, taking over the leadership across all formats.
