Bumrah, Gill and Pant lead India’s captaincy race ahead of England Test series

As India prepares to face England in a five-match Test series, the captaincy debate intensifies with Bumrah, Gill and Pant emerging as top contenders.

As anticipation builds ahead of the official India Test squad announcement for the England tour, set for May 23, the spotlight is firmly on who will succeed Rohit Sharma as India’s red-ball captain. With Rohit and Virat Kohli both having stepped away from Test duties, a new leadership era is on the horizon.

Captaincy contenders heat up

The upcoming five-match Test series in England, starting June 20, will not just mark the beginning of a fresh chapter in Indian cricket but will also witness a significant leadership transition. Among the frontrunners to take over the captaincy mantle are pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, flamboyant wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, and young opener Shubman Gill.

Former India selector MSK Prasad has publicly backed Bumrah for the captaincy role. “My captain would be Jasprit Bumrah as he has already proven himself as a leader. I want Shubman Gill to be the vice-captain and gain experience under him,” said Prasad. He also mentioned KL Rahul as an alternative captaincy option in case of Bumrah’s fitness concerns.

Gavaskar highlights Gill’s IPL experience

Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar added to the growing debate, noting that all three — Gill, Pant, and Shreyas Iyer — show leadership qualities reminiscent of India’s past greats like Dhoni, Rohit and Kohli. Gavaskar particularly praised Gill’s competitiveness and proactive approach, both on and off the field.

He also emphasized how the Indian Premier League has emerged as a proving ground for future national captains, stating that IPL experience plays a crucial role in preparing players for international leadership challenges.

Potential squad changes on the cards

With Kohli and Rohit’s absence, the door is open for emerging talents. Youngsters like B Sai Sudharsan, Sarfaraz Khan, and Shreyas Iyer are in contention for middle-order slots. Meanwhile, a fierce battle is underway among the fast bowlers, with Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and Harshit Rana all vying for a spot.

Prasad’s provisional squad includes key names such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Gill (VC), Pant, Jadeja, Nitish Reddy, Kuldeep Yadav, Bumrah (C), Siraj, Shami, Prasidh, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep, and Abhimanyu Easwaran.

Official confirmation awaited

Despite the mounting speculation and endorsements from former cricketers, the BCCI’s selection panel has yet to make any official announcement regarding the Test captaincy. The final decision is expected to be unveiled on May 23.
