Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting suggested that Shubman Gill, India’s newly appointed Test captain, should shift to the number four batting position for the upcoming five-Test series in England, starting 20 June, due to his Test batting challenges and the demands of leadership.
With Virat Kohli’s retirement leaving the number four slot vacant, Ponting endorsed Gill for the role in the early phase of his captaincy.
Speaking to PTI on the sidelines of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he guided Punjab Kings to the final, Ponting said, “Gill’s white-ball game is exceptional, but his Test batting needs refinement. Captaincy adds pressure, and batting at four could help him manage both roles initially.”
Ponting praised India’s choice of Gill as captain, predicting a long tenure. “I tipped him for captaincy during last summer’s Sydney Test when Rohit was absent and Bumrah faced injury concerns,” he recalled.
Having met Gill several times, Ponting noted, “He’s led Gujarat Titans superbly, and the added responsibility of captaincy seems to suit his calm, level-headed nature. He’s set to be a cornerstone of Indian cricket for the next decade.”
Gill, who began as an opener before moving to number three in 2024, has faced criticism for playing with hard hands and a questionable defensive technique in his 32-Test career.
Ponting believes Gill’s challenges are more mental than technical. “Great Test players like Virender Sehwag didn’t rely on stout defence but controlled their stroke-play. Gill’s defence is technically sound, but he sometimes loses focus or gets complacent mid-innings. Test cricket demands unwavering commitment to every ball over long sessions,” he explained.
Ponting sees the number four spot as ideal for Gill at Leeds, suggesting, “With Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan opening, a more experienced batter like KL Rahul or Karun Nair at three would stabilise the order, allowing Gill to settle at four before potentially moving up.”
Ponting also advocated for Sai Sudharsan’s Test debut as an opener alongside Jaiswal, citing his stellar form. “Sudharsan’s time has come. With Rohit and Kohli gone, India’s team is regenerating. Sudharsan’s first-class runs and standout IPL 2025 performance, where he won the Orange Cap, show he’s ready. His technique is solid, and placing KL Rahul in the middle order adds stability,” he said.
