Indian coach Sitanshu Kotak remains silent on Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness ahead of Champions Trophy

With the Champions Trophy scheduled to kick off on February 19 in Dubai and Pakistan, speculation is rife about the pressures facing the BCCI medical team and Bumrah to achieve fitness in time for the tournament.

Team India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, has remained tight-lipped regarding the fitness status of Jasprit Bumrah as the deadline for finalizing the Champions Trophy squad approaches. Bumrah is included in India’s roster for the prestigious ICC event, but uncertainty looms over his participation, as the BCCI has yet to provide an update on his condition following a back strain sustained during the tour of Australia.

With the Champions Trophy scheduled to kick off on February 19 in Dubai and Pakistan, speculation is rife about the pressures facing the BCCI medical team and Bumrah to achieve fitness in time for the tournament.

When questioned about Bumrah’s injury status prior to the second ODI against England, Kotak acknowledged he was unaware of the results of any scans. “That’s something the physio would know,” he stated during a press conference.

Despite this uncertainty, Kotak expressed confidence in the team’s preparation, although he refrained from discussing potential combinations. “The entire team looks solid. Regarding any experiments, the integration of new players or exclusion of senior ones will be determined by the head coach and captain. I can’t comment on that.”

Concerning team selections, he emphasized that “the decision lies with the head coach and captain.” Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami has made his return to action and appears to be in good form, a promising sign for Team India. Kotak confirmed that Shami is “completely fit” after a 14-month injury hiatus, during which he demonstrated his fitness in domestic cricket before being called up for the England series. Should Bumrah remain unfit, Shami is expected to spearhead the Indian pace attack.

In the first ODI against England, India opted for Shami and Harshit Rana as their two primary pacers, leaving Arshdeep Singh—selected for the Champions Trophy—on the bench, a decision that raised questions. When asked if Arshdeep would get an opportunity, Kotak again chose to remain silent, reiterating, “That decision lies with the head coach and captain.”

Kohli reacts to BCCI’s family restriction rule, says families have a big role to play when players go through rough patches

“People who don’t see the complete picture often suggest keeping families away, without grasping the benefits they bring,” he stated.

Veteran Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has spoken out regarding the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) recent policy that limits the presence of players’ families during tours. At 36 years old, Kohli played a crucial role in leading India to their third Champions Trophy victory, adding to the titles from 2002 and 2013. He emphasized the significant support families provide during challenging times on the road.

In response to India’s 1-3 defeat in the Test series against Australia earlier this year, the BCCI implemented a regulation outlining that players’ spouses and children may join them on tours exceeding 45 days only after the initial two weeks, with a cap of 14 days for their stay.

“It’s really hard for others to fathom how stabilizing it is to reunite with your family amidst the pressures of competition,” Kohli remarked at the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit prior to the IPL 2025, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

Kohli articulated his disappointment at the lack of understanding surrounding the emotional support that family offers. “People who don’t see the complete picture often suggest keeping families away, without grasping the benefits they bring,” he stated.

The prolific batsman, who recently became the fastest to reach 14,000 runs in ODIs—surpassing Sachin Tendulkar—believes that having family nearby equips players to approach their game with a clearer sense of accountability.

“If you ask any player whether they want their family around, the answer is always yes. I prefer not to retreat to my room and feel isolated. I want to embrace normalcy, knowing I can return to life after fulfilling my responsibilities on the field,” Kohli explained.

During the Champions Trophy, Kohli’s wife Anushka Sharma passionately supported him from the stands, and following India’s victorious final against New Zealand in Dubai, their heartfelt celebration together quickly gained popularity on social media. Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s wife Ritika Sajdeh and their daughter Samaira were also seen celebrating during the tournament, while Kohli delivered remarkable performances, including a century against Pakistan and an 84-run innings against Australia in the semi-final.
