Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been officially inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, marking a major recognition of his contribution to international cricket. The honour was conferred on June 9, making him the 11th Indian to be included in the prestigious list.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) praised Dhoni for his unmatched leadership qualities, consistent performance, and impact on Indian cricket. With this induction, Dhoni joins a distinguished list of Indian legends such as Kapil Dev, Rahul Dravid, and Sachin Tendulkar.

“It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame… something I will cherish forever,” Dhoni said in response to the recognition.

Across 538 international matches, Dhoni accumulated 17,266 runs and effected 829 dismissals, showcasing his prowess both as a batsman and a wicket-keeper. He holds a highest Test score of 224 and an unbeaten 183 in ODIs. His tally includes 16 centuries and 108 half-centuries.

From a duck to dominance: Dhoni’s journey

Debuting in 2004 with a duck in his first ODI, Dhoni quickly rose through the ranks. His breakout 148-run innings against Pakistan in 2005 and a memorable 183 against Sri Lanka set the tone for a remarkable career. His 183 remains the highest individual ODI score by a wicket-keeper.

A captain who changed Indian cricket

Dhoni led India to numerous achievements:

  • 2007 T20 World Cup
  • 2011 ODI World Cup
  • ICC Champions Trophy 2013
  • No.1 Test team ranking (2009-11)

Known for his composed leadership, he transitioned smoothly between building new teams and backing experienced players. While his Test captaincy had a conservative tone, his leadership in white-ball cricket redefined India’s global cricketing stature.
