Neeraj Chopra gets nominated for Laureus World Sports Award 2022, shares gratitude on Twitter

It seems like Neeraj Chopra is on a riot to keep creating history. After becoming the first-ever gold medallist in Tokyo Olympics, Neeraj Chopra has now become the third Indian to get nominated for Laureus World Sports Award. On Wednesday, February 2, 2022, the star athlete announced that he is among the six nominees for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award 2022.
The Olympic gold medallist took to his official Twitter handle to show his gratitude for the honour and recognition. In his tweet, he said that it is a very special feeling to be nominated along with some exceptional athletes for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year award. He also congratulated his fellow nominees.
Neeraj Chopra is the only third Indian ever to earn this recognition. The six nominees are Neeraj Chopra (India), Pedri (Spain), Yulimar Rojas (Venezuela), Emma Raducanu (Great Britain) and Ariarne Titmus (Australian).
Before Neeraj Chopra, wrestler Vinesh Phogat and cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar were the only two athletes to get nominated for Laureus World Sports Award. Vinesh Phogat got nominated in the year 2019, and Sachin Tendulkar won the Laureus Sporting Moment Award 2000-2020 to commemorate his emotional moment following India’s victory in the 2011 ICC World Cup when his team carried him on their shoulders in a lap of honour.
The Nominees in each of the seven categories for this year’s Laureus World Sports Awards were chosen by a panel of more than 1,300 of the world’s top sportswriters and broadcasters. Following a vote by the Laureus World Sports Academy, the world’s ultimate sports jury comprised of 71 of the greatest athletic legends of all time, the winners will be announced in April.
Neeraj Chopra, who won gold in the men’s javelin in Tokyo, is one of just two Indians to win an individual Olympic gold medal, the other being Abhinav Bindra, who won gold in the air rifle in 2008. He made his Olympic debut in Tokyo at the age of 23, and he won the gold medal with a throw of 87.58 metres.

Haryana: Man opens fire outside Panchkula cafe and flees the spot quickly, bouncer injured; investigation underway

In a shocking incident, a man opens fire at an unidentified youth at Coco Cafe and Lounge in Panchkula in the wee hours. The incident occurred at around 4:30 am on July 3 at a Sector-11-based cafe lounge.
The man identified as Mohit, who hails from Ludhiana, fired three shots at an unidentified man with an intent to kill but in the process, the gunshot hit the attacker’s accomplice’s foot who was standing by the car as the youth ducked to prevent it. During this, a bouncer was also injured as he attempted to prevent the attacker from entering the premises.
The bouncer, Naresh Sharma lodged an FIR against Mohit and the investigation to catch him is underway. The police have obtained the footage from the CCTV that was installed at the Coco Cafe and Lounge.

Goa: Anmod Ghat Road closed due to heavy landslide, flood

The debris was so much that more than half of the train got buried under it, and the 01134 Mangaluru Junction-CSMT Mumbai train derailed. However, there is no report of any casualty of any passenger in this incident.
Another landslide occurred at the same time between Dudhsagar and Karanjali railway stations, officials said. SWR officials said the Mangaluru-Mumbai train was running on the diverted route on SWR when the engine and the first coach derailed.
Passengers of the derailed coaches were shifted to other coaches and the train was called back to Kulem railway station. 02780 Nizamuddin-Vasco train was stopped between Dudhsagar and Karanjali station and later brought to Castle rock railway station. Passengers were taken to different places by bus. At the same time, the work of repair of the track has been started.
A woman was killed and nearly 1,000 houses were damaged in a flood-related incident in Goa following heavy rains and rising water levels in rivers. Hundreds of people have been safely evacuated from low-lying areas.

A man in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal has been arrested for selling non-veg packed newspapers that feature photos of Hindu deities. The Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM) district Kailash Gupta has filed an FIR against the person at the Sadar Police Station for insulting the religious beliefs of a particular community. The man has been identified as Mohammad Talib.
Talib has been booked under Section 295 A (deliberate act intended to stomp on the religious sentiments of any group) of the IPC. According to the reports, the Uttar Pradesh police have found newspapers with photos of deities in huge numbers at the hotel counter named Mehak Restaurant.
On questioning the Mehak Restaurant, the owner said that his worker had bought newspapers from a salvage store and used these newspapers to wrap food items for customers, just like many restaurants do, without realizing that these newspapers depict photos of Hindu deities.
The family member of Talib, who has been running the restaurant since 2012, said newspapers have been used to pack food items for years. He further said that no one remembers the headlines or photographs in the newspapers before using them to wrap food items.
Earlier, during the Navaratri festival, a local Hindi daily reported that Talib used to pack non-veg items in the newspapers that depicted photos of Hindu deities. According to Circle officer Jitendra Kumar, police rushed to the hotel after receiving a report on Sunday night and seized the objectionable items. Owing to the complex situation, police instantly filed an FIR and detained the owner of the restaurant for insulting a certain group’s religious beliefs.
