Less than half an hour after Afghanistan announced its squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, Rashid Khan has stepped down as captain of the Afghanistan Cricket Team.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board has put out a list of 18 players to participate in the T20 World Cup which is scheduled to take place in four venues of the United Arab Emirates and neighbouring Oman.

Within half an hour of the ACB team announcement, Khan tweeted that he is no longer the captain of the Afghanistan Cricket Team. He took this decision because his consent was not considered for the selection of the team. Rashid said he will continue to play for Afghanistan and said it is a matter of pride for him to play for Afghanistan.

In the 18-member squad, senior players, wicketkeeper-batsman Mohd Shahzad, fast bowlers Shapoor Zadran and Dawlat Zadran, have found their way back into the team.

Following Rashid Khan’s resignation, all-rounder Mohd Nabi is likely to lead the team in the T20 World Cup. Nabi had previously already captained the side in 12 T20Is from 2013-14.

The official announcement from Afghanistan Cricket Board is awaited on who will lead the team in T20 World Cup. Rashid and Nabi are part of IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad.

When Taliban was capturing Afghanistan, Rashid was one of the very few prominent personalities from the war-ravaged nation to keep asking for help from world leaders to save his country.

Now, other cricket boards are refusing to play Afghanistan in the near future because the now-ruling Taliban are likely to proscribe women from playing cricket.

Recently, Cricket Australia threatened the ACB that it would cancel the Hobart Test match which will be played on November 27, if the Taliban bans women from playing cricket.

The Taliban are said to be okay with cricket since many of them grew up in cricket-crazy Pakistan when the Soviet-supported regime ruled in Kabul. But women’s cricket maybe a different cup of tea.

Rishabh Pant hit an unbeaten 88 as Delhi Capitals beat Gujarat Titans by 4 runs in the Indian Premier League 2024 match at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday. Delhi Capitals were set to bat first, Pant (88 not out of 43 deliveries) and Axar Patel (66 off 43 deliveries) scored half centuries to take Delhi Capitals to 224 for 4.

In reply, Sai Sudarshan (65 off 29 ) and David Miller (55 off 23) scored half centuries but were not able to  take Gujarat Titans over the line, as the GT finished at 220 runs after losing 8 wickets in their 20 overs. Earlier, Axar Patel and Rishabh Pant forged a 113-run partnership to steady the innings after medium pacer Sandeep Warrier (3/15) ran through the batting line up of Delhi Capitals. Captain Rishabh Pant was in his element scoring as many as 8 sixes and 5 fours. Tristan Stubbs quickfired 26 runs off 7 deliveries.

Rashid Khan’s explosive batting did not prove to be enough for Gujarat Titans, as it is Delhi Capitals who emerged as winners in this last-over thriller match by just 4 runs. David Miller and Rashid Khan’s batting brilliance in the death overs, almost took Gujarat Titans the full distance, but the 225 run target just proved to be too much for the Shubman Gill-led side.

DC bowlers started off the match with quite some promise, but their lack of grit in the death overs continued to be the negative highlight in the ongoing season of IPL. Despite the 2 dropped catches, the fielding was absolutely top-notch from DC in this match, specifically from the likes of, Axar Patel, Tristan Stubbs and Jake Fraser McGurk. Gujarat Titans’s top-order woes have yet again come to haunt them, which will push them to come up with a better game plan before they head further into the more intense stages of IPL 2024.
