BCCI to introduce women’s Test match tournament in Pune from March 28

Published

After four years, women’s red-ball cricket will be contested domestically in India again as the BCCI holds the senior inter zonal multi-day Trophy in Pune starting on March 28, the board said on Friday.

Following the Indian women’s team’s return to Test cricket, the decision was taken. In recent years, the team has faced Australia and England in Test matches. The last time women’s domestic red ball cricket was played was in 2018.

Former India bowler Amita Sharma said this is a positive move made by BCCI.  Sharma said, they need the next generation of cricketers to play red ball cricket at the domestic level. The national team has started playing Test cricket again.

Red ball should be played at the state level as well, not simply the zonal level, in her opinion. They had both of those incidents back then, she continued.

Six teams representing the East, West, North, South, Central, and North-East zones will compete in the tournament, which is being hosted by the Maharashtra Cricket Association.

Taking place over three days each, the five matches they will compete in will be one day longer than the two-day games of the 2018 season.

The tournament will start immediately following the Women’s Premier League, which concludes on March 17.

On March 28, the quarterfinals between the East and North East Zones and the West and Central Zones will take place. On April 3, the semifinals are scheduled. The final match is scheduled to be held on April 9, 10 and 11.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is off to a great start in its second edition. There have already been a few nail-biting dramas in the six-team competition, and it looks like more to come. Delhi Capitals (DC) have won two of their last three games and are now top of the rankings with four points. Both the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have four points overall, although they lag behind DC on the net run rate (NRR).

The BCCI said on Thursday that India batsman KL Rahul will not play in the fifth and final Test of the five-match series against England in Dharamsala. Rahul is still recuperating from his injury, and the BCCI Medical Team is keeping a close eye on him and working with London-based doctors to manage his condition going forward.

Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who was previously out of the team, will be joining them in Dharamsala for the fifth Test, the BCCI has now announced.

In a release, the BCCI said Jasprit Bumrah, who was released from the team for the fourth Test in Ranchi, will join the team in Dharamsala for the fifth Test.

Washington Sundar has been dropped from the team. He will play with his Ranji Trophy team, Tamil Nadu, as they take on Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy semi-final on March 2, 2024. If necessary, he would join the India team for the fifth Test when the domestic match is over, the statement continued.

Additionally, the BCCI announced that standout pacer Mohammed Shami, who had surgery on Monday, will shortly report to Bengaluru’s National Cricket Academy (NCA) to begin his recuperation.

Meanwhile, India’s young batter, Devdutt Padikkal, is named as the replacement for KL Rahul in the middle order. This will also be his debut match.

India defeated England at Ranchi by 5 wickets, and they went on to win the 5-match series 3-1. One of the most intriguing tests to date was the Ranchi Test, in which both teams competed on a wicket that was unpredictable and gave spinners an added advantage. To keep their respective sides in the match, India’s Ravichandran Ashwin and England’s Shoaib Bashir secured crucial wickets.

Updated India’s playing eleven for the fifth Test are: Rohit Sharma (captain), Jasprit Bumrah (vice captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (wk), KS Bharat (wk), Devdutt Padikkal, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd.
