Former Indian batter VVS Laxman will take over as the National Cricket Academy head coach after Rahul Dravid moved Team India job replacing Ravi Shastri.

Confirming the development on Sunday, the BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said that former India batter VVS Laxman will be taking charge as the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

The BCCI had wanted VVS Laxman as NCA head coach. The BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah have convinced Laxman to take up the job. The BCCI will now have to appoint a bowling coach at NCA as Paras Mhambrey joining the Indian team.

Earlier, a BCCI official had said that the board wants to make sure that NCA and the Indian team should have a good understanding and that is one of the reasons behind appointing Dravid and Laxman.

Commenting on his appointment as head coach, Dravid has already mentioned how he is looking forward to building on the base that has been created by current coach Ravi Shastri.

The BCCI had invited the applications for the the role and also conducted interviews to chose the best one to hold NCA.

The board will also put out an advertisement for hiring a bowling coach at NCA after Paras Mhambrey was elevated as the bowling coach of the men’s team.
The BCCI will have to hasten the process, given the U-19 World Cup is just about 2 months away.

Laxman had turned down the BCCI’s offer two months ago and he had been put on the table as a backup option. He was ready to take up the Team India job if Dravid had declined.
