Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting on Thursday said he is surprised by the BCCI’s decision to appoint Rahul Dravid as Team India head coach. Dravid took the head coach’s position of the Indian team looking at how he has a young family at home, he said.

Dravid-Rohit era began on Wednesday with a 5-wicket win against New Zealand in the first T20I of the three-match series in Jaipur.

Ponting is surprised that Dravid has taken it up as well. There was a lot of chat about how happy he was in the Under-19 role he had, he said.

Ponting also revealed that he was approached for the Team India coach’s job but he had to turn it down as he cannot give the job that much time. Ponting said on the Grade Cricketers Podcast that he had a conversation with some people about it during the IPL.

After the home series against New Zealand, the Indian team will be toured South African and only 11 months are left for the T20 World Cup 2022. In such a situation, Dravid has a lot of challenges on the table like the best bowling combination and No.4 batter and finishers.

Ponting is the head coach of Delhi Capitals, a position he took up in 2019. He has remained successful with his side reaching the last four on three consecutive years since then.
