Wimbledon 2022: Serena and Venus Williams names missing from the entry list, Here’s why

There’s a possibility that either of them can request for a wild-card entry in the Grand Slam tournament. Wimbledon 2022 will begin from June 27.

The elite sister duo, Serena and Venus Williams will not be featuring in the Wimbledon Women Single’s. Both their names were missing from the entry list of Wimbledon. Another surprising fact is that, apart from the William sisters, Roger Federer’s name was also missing from the entry list.

However, there’s a possibility that either of them can request for a wild-card entry in the Grand Slam tournament. Wimbledon 2022 will begin from June 27. Apart from Serena and Venus, Leylah Fernandez’s name is also missing from the entry list. Leylah was the US Open 2021 runner-up. Unfortunately, she had injured her right foot making her miss out the French Open this week.

Making a record, Serena William has won seven Open era and record 23 major singles championships at the All-England Club. The most recently one was in 2016. The 40-year-old American athlete was also the runner-up there in 2018 and 2019. After injuring her right leg. Hence, she was asked to discontinue playing in the first-round match, last year.

On the other hand, Venus is a five-time singles champion at Wimbledon. She also has seven major singles trophies in total. Venus William played won the latest match on tour came at Chicago, last August at the age of 41.

Considering the age and injuries, the missing names of William sisters from the Wimbledon entry list does not comes as a shock. But to their fans, this was indeed a sad moment. Seeing your childhood heroes and heroines becoming old and tired can be disturbing at times. But one need to accept the reality of life and cherish the good work done by them.

However, the reason behind Roger Federer’s name from the entry list is still unknown. For past some time, the star player was dealing with injuries but any official statement has not been generated regarding his health or recovery.

After defeating New Zealand by 3-0 in the three-match ODI series, the Indian team will now play the three-match T20I series against the Black Caps. The first match of the T20 series between India and New Zealand will be played in Ranchi on Friday. Under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, the young team India has performed brilliantly so far.

The team would like to continue this performance going forward. At the same time, the command of New Zealand is in the hands of experienced all-rounder Mitchell Santner. However, Santner does not have much captaincy experience. In such a situation, the Indian team can take advantage of this.

A total of 22 T20 matches have been played between India and New Zealand so far. Of these, India has won 10, while the Kiwi team has won nine matches and 3 matches are tied. Both the teams have come face to face eight times in India. Of these, Team India won five times, while New Zealand won three matches. India and New Zealand team have come face to face once in Ranchi before. In this match played in 2021, Team India had won by seven wickets.

Moreover, the Indian team has not lost to New Zealand in this format for the last 15 months. In this format, India got the last defeat from the Kiwi team on 31 October 2021. Then New Zealand defeated India in the T20 World Cup in Dubai. Since then, both the teams have faced each other five times in this format, out of which four matches have been won by India, while one match has ended in a tie.

This is the eighth bilateral T20 series between the two teams. India has won four of these series, while India has lost in three. India’s last defeat to New Zealand in T20 series was in 2018/19. Then the Kiwi team defeated India by 2–1 in the three-match T20 series.

Great captaincy from Hardik

India’s performance so far under Hardik’s captaincy has been impressive. He has captained Team India in eight T20 matches and India has won six matches out of these. Under his captaincy, the Indian team has not lost a single match so far. One match ended in a tie, while one match ended in no result. Under the captaincy of Hardik, the Indian team has won bilateral T20 series against Ireland, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Looking at the Mission 2024 T20 World Cup, the Indian team would like to maintain the winning streak.

Sania Mirza has faced defeat in her last Grand Slam. In the mixed doubles final, Sania and Rohan Bopanna have lost by 6-7, 6-2. Sania had already announced that this would be her last Grand Slam. Mirza was eliminated in the second round of women’s doubles and had to face defeat in the final in the mixed doubles too. With this defeat, Sania’s dream of a victorious farewell at Grand Slam has also been shattered.

In the mixed doubles final of the Australian Open, Brazilian pair of Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos defeated Sania and Rohan by a margin of 6-7 and 2-6.

For the unversed, Sania Mirza has won three women’s doubles Grand Slam titles and three mixed doubles titles in her career. While Bopanna has won one mixed doubles Grand Slam title. The unseeded Indian pair of Sania and Bopanna defeated Desirea Krawczyk and Neil Skupski by 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 10-6 in the semi-finals of the Australian Open 2023. The pair got a walkover in the quarterfinal match.

The Indian pair defeated Uruguay and Japanese pair of Ariel Behar and Makato Ninomiya by 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) to reach the quarterfinals.

Sania-Rohan could not maintain rhythm in the final

Sania and Rohan Bopanna lost only one set before the final match in this tournament. In the semi-final match, the pair faced a narrow one-set defeat. The pair was out of touch in the final match and lost in straight sets to win the title. Meanwhile, the men’s doubles pair of Bopanna and Matthew Ebden were bowed out in the first round. Sania and Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina were ousted in the second round of women’s doubles.

Sania Mirza’s Tennis career

Sania Mirza has won 43 WTA titles in her career. She also won three Grand Slam titles in the women’s doubles category. In 2016, she also became the women’s doubles champion at the Australian Open. Sania has also won three Grand Slams in mixed doubles.

In 2009, she won the title in this category at the Australian Open. Sania held the number one spot in the women’s doubles rankings for a long time. However, in the last Grand Slam of her career, she remained one step away from victory.

The secret of Axar Patel taking a break from the New Zealand series is now out. India’s budding all-rounder Axar Patel got married to his fiancée Meha Patel on January 26 in Gujarat’s Vadodara. The video of Axar’s wedding procession has surfaced on social media, where several cricketers like Jaydev Unadkat and Mohammed Kaif have also been spotted attending the function.

The wedding season is going on and several Indian cricket team’s players are also getting married. On January 23, India’s opener batsman KL Rahul tied knot with Bollywood actor Athiya Shetty. After KL Rahul, star all-rounder Axar Patel has also got married.

Indian cricketer Axar Patel tied the knot with Meha Patel in Vadodara on Thursday. Team India’s all-rounder was not a part of the ODI series against New Zealand because of his marriage. Both have been dating for quite some time and were also seen spending holidays together several times in many other countries including America.
