Dell to lay-off over 6,000 employees as demand for PCs decline

Dell Technologies Inc. has become the latest company to lay-off thousands of its employees. As per the latest report in Bloomberg, Dell will slash about 6,650 employees, which is approximate to affect 5 percent of the company’s global workforce, because of the plummeting demand for personal computers.

According to Bloomberg, Co-Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke wrote in a memo that the company is experiencing market conditions that are deteriorating with an uncertain future, and that the amount of the reductions to approximately 5 percent of Dell’s global workforce.

The company announced a similar layoff in 2020 when the Covid pandemic hit. Clarke further said that previous cost-cutting measures, including a pause on hiring and limits on travel, are no longer enough. The company’s spokesperson said the departmental reorganizations and job reductions are viewed as an opportunity to drive efficiency.

The announcement of employment cuts at Dell is the latest in a growing list of technological firms including Google, Amazon, Meta, and Twitter that have been forced to take similar measures as a result of the pandemic’s financial impact.

The crisis has taken a severe toll on the technology sector, which was previously a solid source of employment. As a result, businesses are now struggling to strike a balance between the necessity to slash costs and the need to maintain competitiveness.

According to a preliminary report, industry analyst IDC said personal computer shipments dropped sharply in the fourth quarter of 2022. Among major companies, Dell saw the largest decline, which is a 37 percent decline as compared with the same period in 2021. Dell generates about 55 percent of its revenue from PCs.

Earlier in November, HP also stated that it would also lay-off its 6,000 employees over the next three years due to the decline in demand for personal computers. Not just this, but Cisco Systems Inc. and International Business Machines Corp. each had also said that they would eliminate about 4,000 workers.
