Karnataka results: Former CM Bangarappa’s sons face-off in Sorab, Madhu beats elder brother Kumar

In an interesting contest in the Sorab assembly constituency in Karnataka between Bangarappa brothers, Madhu Bangarappa wins the seat defeating his elder brother Kumar Bangarappa.

The Bangarappa brothers are the sons of former Karnataka Chief Minister S Bangarappa. The duo had an electoral fight from the same constituency as both belong to rivalry political parties.

While the younger son Madhu Bangarappa belongs to the BJP, his elder brother Kumar Bangarappa is a Congressman.

Interesting fact that in the 2018 state elections, Kumar Bangarappa won the Sorab seat, this time Madhu has won.

The Sorab seat in the Shivamogga district has been a Bangarappa family bastion, since 1994, the seat has been held by either of the brothers barring just the 2008 election when a BJP candidate clinched the victory.

The seat was earlier nurtured by the senior Bangarappa and former Chief Minister until 1994, when he chose to fight for the Lok Sabha polls, and made elder son Kumar the heir to his  legacy.

The rift between both the brothers stretched after the 2004 general elections when senior Bangarappa joined BJP and fielded his younger son Madhu from the constituency, disgruntled Kumar joined hands with the Congress the same day.

The animosity between both the siblings continued and it widened post the death of their father in 2011.

Madhu won the seat in the 2013 state elections, then in 2018, Kumar won defeating Madhu and now Madhu has again defeated Kumar.

During the campaigning for this election Madhu remembered his father in almost every speech of his campaign rally to gain people’s sympathy.

Senior Bangarappa represented Sorab for several decades, from 1967 to 1994.

The Bangarappa brothers during the elections hold no bars in attacking each other labelling different charges, several times they have brought out their family disputes in the public while asking public support.

In Jharkhand, PM Modi says people are hankering for a handful of sand, Congress-JMM smuggling it

JMM-Congress have nothing to do with the issue of the people, they are filling their coffers, Modi said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lashed out at the Congress-JMM coalition over its corruption, saying the alliance is busy selling rivers, streams, and mountains in the state, adding their leaders, in fact, have built houses by smuggling sand. PM Modi alleged that they are taking bribes even for birth and death certificates.

Addressing the rally in Jharkhand’s Gumala, the Prime Minister said: “This is your money, you are its owner and Modi will not let your money be looted.” He added that “those who have looted will have to return it and spend their lives in jail” once his party comes to power in the state.

JMM-Congress have nothing to do with the issue of the people, they are filling their coffers, Modi said.

Hitting out at the alliance, PM Modi said: “You have seen the mountains of notes of the JMM and Congress leaders and ministers. I have been a Chief Minister and even become a Prime Minister, but I have never seen such huge mountains of notes in my life. I saw such mountains for the first time on TV. So many notes came out that the machines got tired of counting them.”

“If you divide into castes then the strength of the tribals will diminish. That’s why I say – if we stay united, we will be safe,” he reiterated his statement targeting the Congress party.

Till there was no unity between OBCs, tribals and Dalits, the Congress kept forming governments at the Centre, claimed Modi.

“Beware of Congress-JMM’s evil designs and conspiracies. They can go to any extent to snatch power. Congress has been an opponent of SC, ST, and OBC unity since Independence,” Modi said.

“More than 125 sub-castes are considered OBCs in the Chotanagpur region. Congress-JMM wants to break the OBC unity by pitting sub-castes against each other. I warn you ‘ek rahoge toh safe rahoge’,” he added. He said a BJP-led government was needed in Jharkhand to drive out infiltrators and eradicate corruption.

Launching a scathing attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday said it was necessary to enroll Modi in a primary school again for his remarks on the red book of the Constitution.

Addressing a press conference after launching the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi ‘s (MVA) manifesto for Maharashtra Assembly elections, Kharge displayed a red book of the Constitution and said it was not blank as was being projected by PM Modi and his party BJP.

”It is necessary to enroll him in a primary school again,” the Congress chief said. Kharge said the red handbook was only used for reference and it was not the entire Constitution.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule, Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole, Congress National General Secretary KC Venugopal and other leaders of the MVA alliance were also present during the launch of the MVA manifesto.

On the Prime Minister and BJP equating a red book of the Constitution with urban Naxalism, Kharge said Modi gave a similar copy in 2017 to then President Ram Nath Kovind.

The Congress chief also noted that his party’s demand for a caste census is not to divide people, but to understand how various communities are placed at present so that they can get more benefits.

Notably, PM Modi on Saturday termed the act as a testament to Congress’ disregard and hate for Ambedkar and said the red book of the Constitution which was flaunted and distributed by the grand old party contained nothing.

PM Modi was referring to the recent event led by Lok Sabha LoP and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Maharashtra’s Nagpur, where reportedly the books with ‘Constitution of India’ written on the front, containing blank pages except for the preamble on the first page, were distributed.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently alleged that Gandhi was trying to seek support from urban Naxals and anarchists by holding a red book in his hand.

Gandhi, who has been demanding quite times for a nationwide caste census and has been displaying an abridged version of the Constitution in a red cover during his rallies, has promised a caste census in Maharashtra also. The Congress ruled Telangana kicked off the caste census in the state on Saturday.

The Congress leader described the MVA’s manifesto as all-inclusive and participatory. Amongst several promises for Maharashtra, Kharge emphasised giving Rs 4,000 monthly stipend to youth seeking jobs.

He said the health insurance scheme of Rs 25 lakh which was started by former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot in the state will be implemented in Maharashtra as well.

“We have decided to do a caste census and we will remove the 50% ceiling on reservation, in line with Tamil Nadu,” he asserted.
