At least nine people, including five students, died, 12 people are critically injured and 28 others sustained minor injuries in a road accident in Vadakkencherry in Kerala’s Palakkad district on Wednesday late night. The students were on a school trip when the mishap occurred.
According to the reports, the students of Baselios School of Mulanthuruthy, Ernakulam, were on a school trip when the tourist bus they were travelling in collided with a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus. Reportedly, the tourist bus was on its way to Ooty from Ernakulam when it collided with the KSRTC bus.
The police reached the spot immediately and rushed the injured to the Palakkad District Hospital. The bodies of the deceased people are in Palakkad and Alathur hospitals.
Photos from the site show the KSRTC bus in a damaged state with the roof’s metal pulled off and one side completely missing. The tourist bus also suffered major damage, with the windshield and window glass shattered.
The KSRTC bus driver and the conductor said the driver of the tourist bus carrying 49 people, including 42 students, five teachers and two drivers, was travelling over the speed limit and crashed into the rear of the KSRTC bus while trying to overtake it.

The KSRTC bus driver claimed that the tourist bus was travelling over the upper limit and at that time the tourist bus driver lost control and hit the transport bus. According to officials, the driver might have also lost control because of the rain.
The KSRTC bus driver told the media that This is a Kottarakara-Coimbatore service bus. By the time they arrived in Thrissur, they had reached their passenger capacity. People were being dropped off at each station as they moved ahead. A tourist bus suddenly smashed into the rear of the transport bus and drifted to the right. With a lot of effort, I managed to stop the bus before it plunged into the swamp, he added.
The deceased include five students from the Baselios School, their teacher, and three passengers from the KSRTC bus. One of the students said almost everyone was asleep when the accident happened. He said he was sitting in the back seat and did not know what happened. He heard a sound and later managed to get out of the window.
The students of Classes 10 to 12 were going to Ooty on a leisure tour.
