Mamata Banerjee and Amit Shah

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday demanded Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s resignation after his remarks that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) will not survive beyond 2025 if the BJP wins 35 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Calling Amit Shah’s remarks undemocratic and unconstitutional, the TMC supremo said that the Home Minister should not speak like a goon, adding that a conspiracy is being hatched to dislodge the state government.

Addressing a rally at Suri in Birbhum district on April 14, Shah said that if BJP wins 35 out of 42 seats in the upcoming elections, then the Trinamool Congress government will collapse even before 2025.

Banerjee said, on Friday, Amit Shah addressed a rally. That is fine. But how can the Union home minister of the country talk about toppling a democratically elected government of a state? Is the constitution of the country being changed? He can never make such a comment that if BJP wins 35 Lok Sabha seats, the state government won’t complete the full term, she added.

While speaking to the media, Banerjee also alleged that the Union government is sending central field inspection teams to West Bengal one after another just to stop the development projects undertaken by the state government. She said the Union government has stopped payment of all dues to the state government under different centrally sponsored schemes. Now they have started adopting the strategy of sending the central inspection teams.

Banerjee also said that the arrest of Trinamool Congress MLAs in connection with the multi-crore scam in the recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff in West Bengal is a ploy to reduce the strength of her party within the Assembly.

Banerjee reinforced the call to the opposition leaders to come together against the saffron party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, asserting that the BJP will not regain power in the upcoming legislative elections.

3-year-old girl trapped in 700-foot borewell for 20 hours in Rajasthan, rescue operations underway

In an unfortunate incident, a 3-year-old girl has been trapped in a 700-feet borewell in Rajasthan’s Kiratpur village for more than 20 hours. A rescue operation is currently underway to save her life.

Reportedly, officials from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local administration, are involved in the rescue operation.

Speaking to the media, Sub Division Magistrate (SDM) Brajesh Choudhary stated that significant progress has been made in the operation and NDRF has been trying to pull the toddler out of the borewell.

He said that the teams of NDRF, SDRF, and administration have been trying to carry out the rescue operations. He added that they have placed a ring below the girl so they are hoping they can rescue her soon. He also affirmed that there has been no deterioration in the girl’s medical conditions.

As per SDRF Sub-Inspector Ravi Kumar, the rescue teams are facing significant challenges due to the compact soil surrounding the borewell. He explained that they are trying to reach the girl but because there is a lot of soil around her they have not been able to rescue her right now. He noted that the soil around her is set due to the moisture but they are trying to dig in the moisture. He said that as of now, they are not sure how much time it will take but they are trying their best.

Reports stated that the authorities have been at the spot since the incident was first reported, ensuring that the girl is rescued and handed over to her family safely.

Additionally, specialised equipment and techniques have been deployed to carefully dig and secure the area around the borewell while ensuring that the child is not harmed in any way.

In order to ensure her safe return, medical personnel are also present to monitor the child’s condition, while local authorities have cordoned off the area to maintain safety and minimise disruptions.

Yogi Adityanath says Congress insulting Ambedkar since Nehru days

Adityanath pointed to examples of Congress’ alleged negligence, including its initial hesitance to include Ambedkar in the Constituent Assembly and the Drafting Committee, crediting Mahatma Gandhi for securing Ambedkar’s position.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday hit out at the Congress, accusing it of disrespecting B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution, both during his life and after his death.

During a press conference held at his official residence at 5 Kalidas Marg, he also claimed that Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, opposed Ambedkar’s inclusion in the Constitution Drafting Committee.

Adityanath’s comments came in the wake of a controversy sparked by Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks about Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha last week. Surrounded by ministers Swatantra Dev Singh and Asim Arun, the Chief Minister emphasised that the purpose of the press conference was to reveal what he called the unethical and unconstitutional actions of Congress and other opposition parties against Ambedkar.

“Dr. B.R. Ambedkar played a pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle, the formulation of the Constitution, and the foundational years of an independent India. Despite facing numerous societal challenges, he achieved the highest accolades in law, finance, and economics. His contributions to the nation are unmatched, and he is deeply revered by every Indian,” Adityanath stated.

He contrasted the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) respect for Ambedkar with the Congress party’s history of disrespect. Adityanath highlighted the BJP’s initiatives to honor Ambedkar’s legacy, including memorials in significant locations like Mhow, Nagpur, Mumbai, and London, where Ambedkar pursued his studies.

“Under BJP leadership, from Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s time to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure, we have made every effort to uphold Ambedkar’s ideals. In stark contrast, the Congress has consistently insulted him and minimised his contributions,” he asserted.

Adityanath pointed to examples of Congress’ alleged negligence, including its initial hesitance to include Ambedkar in the Constituent Assembly and the Drafting Committee, crediting Mahatma Gandhi for securing Ambedkar’s position.

He also recalled an incident during the UPA regime when a textbook depicted a derogatory cartoon of Ambedkar being prodded by Nehru, which was withdrawn only after widespread protests, leading to an apology from then HRD Minister Kapil Sibal.

The Chief Minister claimed that the Congress worked to defeat Ambedkar in elections, including the 1952 general elections for the Mumbai North constituency and the 1954 by-elections.

He alleged that even Nehru campaigned against Ambedkar to ensure his loss, asserting that the Congress consistently aimed to silence the voices of Dalits and marginalized communities.

Adityanath also criticised the Congress for not granting national honors to Ambedkar during his lifetime, stating, “It was only when a government supported by the BJP came to power that Ambedkar was finally awarded the Bharat Ratna.”

He further emphasised the BJP’s commitment to realizing Ambedkar’s vision through programs aimed at benefiting Dalits and marginalized groups, reiterating the party’s dedication to preserving Ambedkar’s legacy while accusing the Congress of ongoing disrespect and divisive politics.
