Rapido

On Friday, a woman from Bengaluru accused the driver of a Rapido bike taxi of engaging in mid-ride masturbation and sexual harassment. The woman tweeted that she had requested a taxi from Town Hall to get home after attending a demonstration against violence in Manipur. She claimed that numerous cancellations from auto-rickshaw taxis had left her with little choice but to choose the bike.

She claimed the Rapido driver arrived on a bike that wasn’t the one listed in the app and gave the excuse that it was getting serviced. She started the trip after using the app to confirm the ride.

The woman claimed that the man allegedly began masturbating while operating the motorbike with one hand as they travelled to their destination. We arrived at a secluded location without any other vehicles during the voyage. Unexpectedly, the driver started riding with one hand while acting inappropriately (masturbating on the bike). I kept quiet during the event out of fear for my safety, she wrote.

The Twitter user said that she asked the driver to drop her off a little distance from her house in order to conceal her location. She asserted that the rider kept calling and texting her despite the fact that she had paid the rider in full. Sharing a screenshot of the allegedly inappropriate WhatsApp messages from the driver, which included a text that stated love you,  the woman said that she then blocked him.

In order to hide my home location, I instructed him to drop me off 200 metres before my intended destination. He immediately began phoning and contacting me on WhatsApp once the ride was ended. To end the pestering, I had to block his number, she tweeted.

She asked about the steps taken to safeguard the safety of the passengers and noted that the driver continued to annoy her with various phone numbers while tagging the bike taxi aggregator in the thread.

The Bengaluru police’s official Twitter account responded to the woman’s accusation by requesting the user’s contact information. The local police department tweeted, that we have informed to@sjparkps to take necessary action in this regard, Please DM your contact number.

However, this is not the first time, Rapido drivers have previously been charged with sexual harassment. A Twitter user going by the handle husnpari uploaded screenshots of obscene texts in March of this year, which she claimed were received by a Rapido driver with whom she had revealed her location via WhatsApp.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pralhad Joshi has been given additional charge of the Ministry of Education following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan amid protests over alleged exam paper leaks.

A seasoned parliamentarian and organisation leader, Joshi is regarded as one of the BJP’s experienced faces, having played key roles in both the party’s organisational structure and the Union government over the years.

A political journey rooted in student leadership

Pralhad Joshi began his public life through student politics before becoming actively involved in the BJP’s organisational work in Karnataka.

Over the years, he emerged as a prominent leader in the state and was elected multiple times as the Member of Parliament from Karnataka’s Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency. He also served as the BJP’s Karnataka unit president, strengthening the party’s presence in the state.

His national political profile grew further after he was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 2014, when the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, formed the government at the Centre.

Experience across key ministries

Joshi currently serves as the Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy. In previous terms, he has also handled important portfolios including Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs.

His long-standing association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and his experience in parliamentary affairs have made him one of the BJP’s trusted leaders.

Education Ministry responsibility

Joshi takes charge of the Education Ministry after Dharmendra Pradhan stepped down from the post amid protests over alleged examination paper leaks.

A day before receiving the additional responsibility, Joshi had defended the Centre’s approach to the ongoing student protests. Speaking to reporters in Delhi, he said the government remained committed to safeguarding students’ interests and alleged that “anti-social elements” were trying to take advantage of the CJP-led agitation.

He also said the Modi government was committed to taking strict action against any irregularities affecting students and reaffirmed its focus on strengthening the education system and protecting the future of young people.
