Actor Chiranjeevi says he will stay away from politics and stay close to cinema

His comments drew fire from critics who argued that such sentiments reinforce the outdated notion that only male heirs are capable of preserving a family’s legacy.

Telugu film actor K. Chiranjeevi recently announced his decision to distance himself from politics and dedicate more time to his film career. In 2008, he entered the political arena by founding the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP). However, he later merged the party with Congress in December 2016 and served as the Union Minister of State for Tourism during his political tenure.

At the pre-release event for his latest movie, Brahma Anandam, on Tuesday, Chiranjeevi addressed rumours about his connections with influential figures in the industry, clarifying that his focus is on serving in different capacities. He expressed optimism that his ambitions for public service would be realized through his brother, Pawan Kalyan, who currently holds the position of Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

Chiranjeevi’s remarks at the event, where he voiced hopes for a grandson to continue his legacy, stirred controversy. Many interpreted his comments as sexist, resulting in substantial criticism on social media.

“At home, it feels like I’m surrounded by my granddaughters—it’s like I’m a warden in a ladies’ hostel,” he said. He went on to wish that his son, Ram Charan, would have a boy this time to uphold their family legacy while acknowledging that Charan’s daughter is “the apple of his eye.” His comments drew fire from critics who argued that such sentiments reinforce the outdated notion that only male heirs are capable of preserving a family’s legacy.

Chiranjeevi, a father of two daughters—Sreeja Konidela and Sushmita Konidela—and a grandfather to several granddaughters, faced backlash for implying that the family name could be carried forward only by a male heir. Social media users rightly pointed out that daughters are equally capable of maintaining a family’s honour and accomplishments.

Professionally, Chiranjeevi is set to appear in the upcoming film Vishwambhara, scheduled for release later this year, marking another milestone in his illustrious career.
