Amritsar's Golden Temple

“This is Punjab, not India”, a girl was told at the Golden Temple in Punjab’s Amritsar as she was reportedly denied entry into the famed temple because of having the Indian flag painted on her face.

A video of the incident that went viral on social media platforms on Monday, shows a Golden Temple staffer telling the girl that “this is Punjab, not India”, as he denies her entry inside the premises due her having the Indian tricolour painted on her face.

Meanwhile, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee General Secretary Gurcharan Singh Grewal while apologizing for any misbehavior, claimed that the flag on the young woman’s face wasn’t a tricolour as it did not have the Ashok Chakra and might have been the flag of some political outfit.

Grewal said the Golden Temple, like every religious place, has its own set of rules and its own decorum and while everyone is welcome to visit, they have to respect the Sikh shrine’s decorum and rules.

Grewal apologized to the woman for the official’s misbehavior, however, he said the flag on her face was not the ‘Tiranga’ as it was missing the Ashok Chakra and could’ve been a political flag.

Gurcharan Singh Grewal rued that Sikhs who played a vital role in India’s independence from the British, are still the most targeted community in the country.

Meanwhile, a video of the incident was widely shared and viewed on social media sites on Monday and sparked outrage among users as they demanded an investigation into the alleged incident.

Some have attributed the incident to the alleged spread of pro-Khalistan ideology and separatism in Punjab as they dubbed the temple official who stopped the girl as a “Khalistani radical.”

One user claimed that Punjab has become a “hub of Khalistani terrorism” where “real Indians” aren’t welcome anymore.

BCCI refuses to print Pakistan on Team India’s jersey for Champions trophy

Published

on

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ignited a new controversy by rejecting the inclusion of the host nation’s name, ‘Pakistan’, on Team India’s jerseys for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. The tournament is set to take place in Pakistan and Dubai, with India playing their games exclusively in Dubai despite Pakistan being the official host.

The decision has not gone down well with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), who expressed their displeasure openly. A PCB official, speaking to the news agency IANS under the condition of anonymity, accused the BCCI of intertwining politics with cricket. “BCCI is bringing politics into cricket, which is detrimental to the spirit of the game. They have consistently refused to travel to Pakistan, and now they resist even the symbolic inclusion of Pakistan’s name on their jersey,” stated the PCB official.

The controversy does not end with the jerseys. Earlier, the BCCI also opted out of sending their captain, Rohit Sharma, to Pakistan for the pre-tournament captains’ meet, which serves as the introductory event of the Champions Trophy.

The PCB had to relent to the BCCI’s demands eventually, allowing the Champions Trophy to adopt a hybrid hosting model. This model lets the Indian team play their matches in Dubai. However, this arrangement also stipulates that the PCB cannot send its team to India for future ICC events, marking a significant standoff in cricket diplomacy between the two nations.

With the Champions Trophy just around the corner, this latest disagreement adds to a series of contentious issues affecting international cricket relations between India and Pakistan, pointing towards a turbulent start to the tournament.
