Award winning film Jai Bhim starring South’s superstar Suriya has been in controversies for a very long time. And now, the director TJ Gnanavel and male lead Suriya and his production house 2D Entertainment have been sued under the copyright statute.

The man suing the film for copyright is none other than V Kulanjiyappan who has claimed that the makers of Jai Bhim have allegedly utilized his life narrative without the promised compensation.

According to the sources, a case has been registered against the director and the production house at the Shastri Nagar police station in Chennai under Section 63 (A) of the Copyright Act. In 2019, Gnanavel had met Kulanjiyappan before the shooting of Jai Bheem and had promised to pay Rs 50 lakh as royalty for his life story.

He was also promised a portion of the profits in addition to this. But reportedly Kulanjiyappan has not yet received the promised compensation. At the 12th Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival, Jai Bhim did not only won several prestigious prizes but also impressed the audience at the box office.

At the festival, Jai Bhim was named Best Feature Film. Manikandan won the Best Supporting Actor award for his powerful portrayal of the victim of police abuse in the film. Readers should not confuse this independent film festival with the esteemed Dadasaheb Phalke Award which is given out by the Government of India.

In an interview with a South channel, Kulanjiyappan’s attorney mentioned that under the Copyright Act, the producers should have obtained his client’s written consent. But so far, no such approval has been requested. Therefore, it is a crime to make a movie on his client’s life and profit from it without his consent.

For the unversed, Suriya, Jyothika, and TJ Gnanavel’s case was rejected by the Madras High Court. In that instance, it was said that the Vanniyar community was inaccurately portrayed in the movie. Two weeks after the High Court’s order, the filmmakers are once again involved in a legal dispute.
