Auto driver viciously beaten up by railway cops

An auto rickshaw driver was brutally thrashed and dragged through the street by a group of men including railway police officials Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain on Sunday.

In a video, which has been widely shared and viewed on social media platforms, the driver is seen viciously beaten by the three men and then dragged through the street in front of his wife and mother even as the women begs for mercy for her husband from the assailants.

According to reports, the incident happened on Sunday night, when auto driver Rakesh Bhatti had gone to Hotel Avantika to pick up a passenger where he had an argument with the hotel owner who then called the police. On this information, three policemen from the nearby GRP police station- Head constable Pradeep Raghuvanshi accompanied by constables Arjun and Kartar- arrived at the scene and assaulted Bhatti with batons.

The video of the incident shows Bhatti being mobbed by the trio and then savagely thrashed with batons on the ground, even as the man’s wife and mother beg for forgiveness and mercy. The attackers then proceed to drag the man through the street, flat on the back by his arms and then thrash him some more in another side street before dragging him away to the police station.

Bhatti’s mother, and wife Meena, who are seen in the video, begging the men to let him go said they received a call from him that some people at Hotel Avantika had assaulted him. They said that they reached there and tried to save him, but instead were thrashed and abused by the policemen.

Police, in a statement, claimed that Bhatti is an anti-social habitual offender, who allegedly picked up a fight with a hotel employee and then assaulted a railway police official for intervening, hence other officials intervened and thrashed the auto driver.

They claimed that the auto driver is a “habitual offender” who has been creating a nuisance in the area and picking up fights with people regularly.

The police claimed that he was also caught vandalising a hotel and there are complaints against him filed in two police stations in the area, adding “he even assaulted a policeman who tried to investigate the matter.”

An official said that a case has been registered against the auto driver and the incident of his viral beating is also being investigated.
