EC announces Bhabanipur bypoll on September 30

The Election Commission of India on Saturday announced the by-election for West Bengal’s Bhabanipur Assembly constituency will be held on September 30. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to contest from here to enter the state Assembly. The EC said the results will be out on October 3. The EC has announced bypolls in an assembly constituency of Odisha and 2 other Bengal seats.
Bhabanipur seat fell vacant since May 21 when Trinamool Congress’s Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay resigned from the seat. A borough of Mamata Banerjee, the CM contested the 2021 elections from Nandigram instead against Suvendu Adhikari, a former protege now in the BJP. Banerjee had won from Bhabanipur both in 2016 and 2011, when she unseated the CPM-led Left Front.
According to an Election Commission press note, the West Bengal chief secretary has informed that in view of administrative exigencies and public interest and to avoid a vacuum in the state, by-elections for Bhabanipur, from where CM Mamata Banerjee intends to contest elections, may be conducted.
As per the press note, the commission has decided not to hold by-elections in other 31 Assembly Constituencies and three parliamentary constituencies across India. Considering the constitutional exigency and special request from West Bengal, it has decided to hold a by-election in Bhabanipur.
Though Mamata was sworn in as the chief minister of West Bengal, she will have to become an MLA within six months after the formation of the government.
The BJP had bet big on wresting power from Banerjee in the 2021 polls. But despite all that, the Trinamool Congress won 213 seats in the 294-seat Assembly. Given the huge mandate, the many leaders who had switched parties returned to the Trinamool fold. A founding TMC member, Mukul Roy returned to Banerjee’s side as did his son Subhranshu Roy.
Former Union Minister Babul Supriyo announced that he has quit politics and would continue to work as the MP from Asansol for this term. He said he will continue to do social work.
