Kidnapped Indian-origin family of 4, including 8-month-old, found dead in California

In a chilling incident, four members of the Indian-origin Sikh family, including an eight-month-old baby girl, were found dead in California, United States in an orchard on Wednesday after they were kidnapped earlier this week. The reports state that the family was abducted at gunpoint on Monday.

The bodies of the deceased were discovered by a farm worker in a remote orchard in Merced County. The victims were identified as baby Aroohi Dheri, Jasleen Kaur, 27, her father, Jasdeep Singh, 36, and the baby’s uncle, Amandeep Singh, 39. According to the officials, the family of four was kidnapped from the family’s trucking company in Merced.

At a press conference, Sheriff Vern Warnke said tonight our worse fears have been confirmed and called it a horrible senseless act. He further said that the family (of the victim) has been notified. We have made arrangements through other contacts to try and get them, he added. Warnke further said that the police are investigating the matter to find the motivation of the killer.

According to the officials, the convicted robber tried to take his own life after the killings. The police nabbed the 48-year-old Jesus Salgado after they caught him using their ATM card in Atwater in Merced County. The police couldn’t interrogate the accused as he is currently under medical supervision.

The surveillance footage which was released on Wednesday showed that the family was pushed inside a truck by an armed guy. Amandeep and Jasdeep were seen leaving the company with their hands bound. A few seconds later, the mother of the infant and the kidnapper followed them to a truck.

Salgado had previously been found guilty in Merced County of attempted false imprisonment, first-degree robbery with the use of a firearm, and an attempt to deter or persuade a victim or witness. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation reports that he received an 11-year state prison sentence in that case. He was released from prison in 2015 and discharged from parole three years later.

The tribal areas, where Autonomous District Councils (ADC) were formed under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution, were also exempted from the purview of the CAA, as per the government officials.

The United States today expressed its concern over the notification of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) by the Indian government on March 11 and said it is closely monitoring the implementation of the Act in India.

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller, at his daily briefing, said that they were concerned about the notification of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 on March 11. They have been closely monitoring this Act and how this Act will be implemented in India.

Respect for religious freedom and equal treatment under the law for all communities are fundamental democratic principles, Miller added.

The Ministry of Home Affairs on March 11 notified the CCA rules for the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019, after it was passed almost five years ago. Notably, the Centre has reduced the qualification period of application for citizenship from 11 to 5 years for eligible migrants who came to India before December 31, 2014.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, taking to X on March 11, said the Modi government today notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024. These rules will now enable minorities persecuted on religious grounds in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to acquire citizenship in our nation. With this notification PM Modi has delivered on another commitment and realised the promise of the makers of the constitution to the Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians living in those countries.

In a press statement, the central government clarified that Indian Muslims need not worry as the CAA will not impact their citizenship.

The Act will not be implemented in all Northeastern States, where an Inner Line Permit (ILP) is required for a visit by people from other parts of the country, including those given special status under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution. Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur come under the ILP.

The tribal areas, where Autonomous District Councils (ADC) were formed under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution, were also exempted from the purview of the CAA, as per the government officials.

Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have agreed on a power-sharing deal to form a new coalition government after days of intense negotiations, as per the senior party leaders.

On Tuesday night, in a joint conference, the PPP Chairman Bhutto announced that PML-N president, 72-year-old Shehbaz Sharif will be the Prime Minister of Pakistan once again and the PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari, 68, is set to assume the role of the President of Pakistan again.

Speaking to reports, Bhutto said the PPP and PML-N have achieved the required number, and now they were in a position to form the government.

He said the former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party-backed candidates and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) could not achieve a simple majority in Parliament to form government in the Centre.

Bilawal hoped that the political alliance with PML-N to form a coalition government would result in a positive market response since the cash-strapped country faced a hung Parliament after the February 8 elections.

Independent candidates, who were supported by the 71-year-old Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, managed to secure 93 seats in the National Assembly.

Shehbaz Sharif, in his speech, expressed confidence that his PML-N party, along with the PPP, now has the necessary numbers to form the next government. He also thanked the leadership of both parties for successfully concluding the talks.

According to the reports, the former prime minister highlighted the unity between the two political parties and their strong position to form the government at the Centre.

The PML-N secured 75 seats in the election, while the PPP came in third with 54 seats. Additionally, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) has agreed to support the two parties with their 17 seats.

To form a government, a party must win 133 out of 265 contested seats in the 266-member National Assembly or the lower house of Parliament.
