France beats right-ward trend, Macron becomes youngest president

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The 39-year-old banker and former finance minister will be France’s youngest president.
Emmanuel Macron, the centrist candidate, won the French presidential election by defeating far-right candidate Marine Le Pen by a convincing margin of 64.78 percent to 35.22 percent in the second round of elections on Sunday.
The 39-year-old banker and former finance minister will be France’s youngest leader since Napoleon Bonaparte.
“I called Emmanuel Macron tonight to congratulate him warmly on his election as President of the Republic,” outgoing President Francois Hollande said in a statement.
“After a long democratic battle, you have decided to give me your trust, I am very grateful,” Macron, leader of the new outfit En Marche!, said in a speech from his headquarters after early results indicated his victory.
“Tonight, and over the next five years, I will serve France in your name with humility, devotion and determination,” he added.
Later while speaking to a jubilant crowd in front of the Louvre Museum, Macron remarked that what his supporters had achieved “does not have a precedent or an equivalent.”
Associated Press reported that French Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve announced Macron’s win minutes after the last polls closed.
Opposition candidate Le Pen conceded her defeat saying France had voted “for continuity”. The National Front leader is said to have called Macron to congratulate him.
This year’s presidential election has been unprecedented in various ways as the dominant political parties -Socialist and Republican- were pushed away by two relatively new outfits. Also, Macron embraced more liberal, EU-centric policies with more pro-globalization reforms while Le Pen represented protectionist, anti-immigrant fringe.
The Socialist Party candidate Benoit Hamon crashed out of the race after getting a meagre 6.4 percent in the first-round ballot on April 23, while the centre-right Republican candidate Francois Fillon failed to get 20 percent of the vote.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
