Trump was to hit Russian and Iranian targets in Syria

WSJ reports that Defense Secretary James Mattis dissuaded president

An American prestigious news organisation has revealed that US President Donald Trump was considering an option of a more robust attack in Syria, including targeting some of the facilities belonging to Russia and Iran. However, Defence Secretary Jim Mattis succeeded in dissuading the president.

The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the decision making process in US administration, reported that Defence Secretary presented the White House with three military options: missile strikes on Syria’s chemical-weapons capabilities, strikes on a wider set of targets, including suspected chemical-weapons research facilities and military command centres.

The daily said that the most robust attack might have reportedly included strikes on Russian air defence in Syria and some Iranian facilities with the aim to curb the capabilities of the Syrian government army, without touching the “political machinery” in Damascus.

WSJ claimed that informed sources told that Trump had pressed his team to consider the third scenario; however, Mattis dissuaded the US leader, who finally approved a hybrid strike comprising the first and the second options.

On April 13, the United States, France, and the United Kingdom launched strikes on a number of targets in Syria in response to the alleged chemical attack in the Damascus’ suburb of Douma.

Meanwhile Russian President Vladimir Putin has told Iranian President Hassan Rouhani that further attacks by Western allies in Syria would inevitably lead to chaos in international relations.

According to RIA news agency, the two leaders, while talking on telephone, agreed that “this illegal action seriously damages the prospects for a political settlement in Syria.”

According to Tehran based Pres TV, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that the “aggressive” US move to carry out military strikes against Syria reveals that Washington has “direct ties” with terrorists.  “The Americans showed such a reaction when they felt that the terrorists were dislodged from an important region like Eastern Ghouta,” he told to Putin.

Rouhani told Putin that the joint military strikes against Syria were an “aggressive measure” aimed at boosting the defeated terrorists’ morale.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also spoke with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday and emphasised that the steps made by US and its allies grossly breach the UN Charter and principles of international law. The two heads of state think it necessary to intensify bilateral cooperation to get ahead with the political solution in Syria, reports TASS.

Meanwhile, Putin has described the attacks as an “act of aggression” and warned they could worsen the humanitarian crisis in Syria.

In a related development, Buthaina Shaaban, the political advisor to President Bashar al-Assad, has praised Syrian air-defenses for intercepting most of the missiles fired by the US and its allies on Saturday. Her remarks were published in a Lebanese news network website Mayadeen on Monday. She claims that the victory marks the beginning of the end of the American empire.

Earlier Syria had claimed of intercepting most of the 110 missiles fired by US, Britain and France targeting Damascus and other Syrian cities and areas. Damascus said that majority of the missiles were shot down by the Syrian defence systems.

Trump says Iran agrees to never have nuclear weapons, rejects $300 billion fund claim

Donald Trump said Iran has agreed to never possess nuclear weapons under a proposed framework, while dismissing reports that the US would provide Tehran with a $300 billion reconstruction fund.

Donald Trump statement

US President Donald Trump has said that Iran has agreed to a commitment that it will never develop or possess nuclear weapons, describing it as a central element of a proposed understanding between Washington and Tehran.

Speaking about the ongoing diplomatic efforts, Trump also rejected reports suggesting that the United States planned to provide Iran with a reconstruction or investment package worth $300 billion. He described such claims as false and said no such arrangement had been agreed.

The remarks come as discussions continue over a broader framework aimed at easing tensions between the two countries. According to Trump, the understanding would ensure that Iran remains without nuclear weapons while opening the door for future engagement if the terms are respected.

Questions remain over final agreement details

Despite Trump’s comments, several aspects of the proposed arrangement remain unclear because the full text of the agreement has not yet been made public.

Reports indicate that negotiations have involved discussions on sanctions relief, access to frozen assets and potential economic measures linked to Iran’s compliance with future commitments. However, the exact scope of these provisions has not been officially confirmed.

Another key issue is how compliance would be monitored. Details regarding inspections, verification mechanisms and the handling of Iran’s existing nuclear materials have yet to be fully explained.

Further negotiations expected

Officials have suggested that discussions on technical nuclear matters could continue even after the signing of an initial memorandum of understanding. Such talks would likely focus on implementation and verification measures.

The proposed framework is being closely watched internationally, as any agreement between the United States and Iran could have significant implications for regional stability and global non-proliferation efforts.

For now, Trump has maintained that the core objective remains clear: ensuring that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon while denying reports that Washington has committed to a multibillion-dollar reconstruction fund.
