Premier League: West Ham stuns Chelsea, Liverpool wins late against Wolves while Manchester City go top of the table

Premier League leaders Chelsea dropped to third on the points table after their defeat against David Moyes’ West Ham United ate the Boleyn Ground. While on the other hand Manchester City goes top of the table after their stunning victory over Watford. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool also registered a late win over Wolves to remain 2nd on the Premier League standings.

Chelsea lose to West Ham United

This is only the second instance when Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel has conceded more than one goal in 52 matches. The defensive record of Chelsea under Tuchel has been nothing else but extraordinary. For the first time, Blue’s goalkeeper Eduardo Mendy conceded 3 goals under Tuchel.

Ace defender Thiago Silva opened the account for Chelsea in the 28th minute of the game Manuel Lanzini in the 40th minute equalized for West Ham from the spot. Once against for Chelsea took the lead by Mason Mout’s clean strike but it was Jarrod Bowen who equalized it for the hosts in the 56th minute. After that Chelsea’s attack looked clueless in the game and the Blue’s lost the match when Arthur Masuaku scored the winner for West Ham.

Chelsea lost this match despite playing their star signing Romelu Lukaku, who was nowhere on the pitch. This is an early blow for Thomas Tuchel, as they already lost their top spot and are now third on the table.

Liverpool wins late

Liverpool is the team with the most number of goals in this season of the Premier League. But Klopp’s men struggled to find the net against Wolves until substitute Divock Origi scored the late winner for Liverpool in the 87th minute of the game and that was enough for Klopp’s men to seal the match.

Manchester City go top of the table

Of all the teams in Premier League, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City had a wonderful weekend after their dominating victory against Watford. Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva scored twice in City’s win, while striker Raheem Sterling also scored a goal.

With the win over Watford, Manchester City is currently at the top with 35 points in 15 matches, While Klopp’s Liverpool (34 points) is on second with just a point less from City in the same number of matches. Meanwhile Chelsea lost their top position and now, is currently at third on the table with 33 points in 15 matches.

Liverpool’s Jota, brother die in freak Lamborghini tyre blow-out in Spain

Portuguese football player Diogo Jota and his elder brother died in a road accident on Thursday in Spain’s Zamora when a tyre of their Lamborghini burst.

Jota’s brother Andre Silva was a footballer. Police said the accident occurred past midnight and the brothers were the only ones in the car and no other vehicle appears to be involved.

The police are yet to find out which of the two were was at the wheel. They said the accident may have been caused by a tyre blowout when they attempted to overtake another vehicle.

Spanish media have release video footage of the aftermath showing skid marks on the road along with a burnt-up car, surrounded by destroyed vegetation. A truck driver passing by the scene also caught the Lamborghini engulfed in video, which has since circulated by the local media.

The accident has occurred only 11 days after Jota’s wedding with Rute Cardoso. The couple had three children.

Jota played for English Premier League club Liverpool FC and also was part of the Portugal squad that beat Spain in the recent UEFA Nation’s League. His brother Andre Silva also played for Penafiel in the lower Portuguese leagues.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said he has no words after the accident. As his football manager his thoughts are not for his team, it’s for his father, son, brother and uncles who are suffering an unimaginable loss, Slot said.

Portugal Prime Minister Luis Montenegro expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family and that it is a sad day for football. Jota was an athlete who greatly honoured Portugal’s name, he added.

FIFA Awards 2022: World Cup winner Lionel Messi and Alexia Putellas win Best Player titles

Lionel Messi has added another achievement to his account. Messi was voted FIFA’s best male player for the year 2022. Messi made Argentina the World Cup champion, ending a 36-year drought. He scored seven goals in this tournament.

On the other hand, Alexia Putellas won the female best player award at the FIFA football awards 2022.

Lionel Messi’s compatriot and coach Lionel Scaloni was named the best male coach. Scaloni guided the South Americans to the World Cup title. Messi, 35, left behind French forward Kylin Mbappe and Karim Benzema for this award. Apart from making Argentina the World Cup champion, Messi scored 27 goals in a total of 49 matches for the country and club in 2021-22.

What did Messi say on receiving the award?

Lionel Messi won the FIFA Best Men’s Player award for the second time. He said, ‘This is wonderful. It has been an amazing year and it is an honour for me to be here to receive the award. I wouldn’t be here without my teammates. I have achieved my long held dream. Only a few people achieve this and I feel fortunate to have done so.’

Lionel Scaloni, the coach who won Argentina the World Cup title, beat Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti at the ceremony in Paris. Guardiola led Manchester City to their sixth Premier League title. At the same time, Ancelotti had given Real Madrid the Champions League title.

England manager Sarina Wigman was voted the best women’s coach of the year. He guided England to the European Championship title last year. It was the team’s first major trophy. Aston Villa and Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez won the best goalkeeper award while England’s Mary Earps won the women’s award. Barcelona’s Alexia Putelas was voted the best female player of the year.
