Shardiya Navratri 2022

The auspicious Hindu festival honoring Goddess Durga, Shardiya Navratri is round the corner. And this year Sharad Navratri will be celebrated on September 26 till October 5 with Vijay Dashami and Durga Visarjan.

For the unversed, the Shardiya Navratri in the Hindu month of Ashwin, which is the most important of all Navratris (Magha, Chaitra and Ashadha). And for these 9 days, devotees will practice fasting as each day will be dedicated to the celebration of goddess Durga’s all 9 avatars (Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalaratri, Mahagauri, and Durga).

And we bring to you the nine mantras devoted to the nine incarnations of Goddess Durga. These mantra or slokas can maximize the effect of your devotion.

Navratri Day 1: Shailputri Devi Mantra

Goddess Shailputri is the first form of Maa Durga. Shailputri was the Daughter of Himalaya and she is also known as Parvatiand and Hemvati. And the Dhyan mantra devoted to her is:

वन्दे वाञ्छितलाभाय चन्द्रार्धकृतशेखराम्। वृषारुढां शूलधरां शैलपुत्रीं यशस्विनीम्॥

Vande Vanchhitlabhay Chandrardhkritshekhram. Vrisharudham Shuldharam Shailputri Yashswinim.

The meaning of this mantra is, “I worship Goddess Shailputri to fulfil my wishes, who is adorned with a half-moon on her head, rides on a bull, carrying a trident and is illustrious.”

Navratri Day 2: Brahmacharini Devi Mantra

Goddess Brahmacharini is the second form of Durga. In this incarnation Goddess did penance (Tapasya) to get Lord Shiva as her husband. And her Dhyan Mantra is:

दधाना करपद्माभ्यामक्षमालाकमण्डलू। देवी प्रसीदतु मयि ब्रह्मचारिण्यनुत्तमा॥

Dadhanakara Padmabhyam akshamala kamandalam, Devi prasidathu mayi rahmacharinya nuththama.

The meaning of this mantra is, “O Devi, Please shower Your Grace on me; O Devi Brahmacharini, You are Incomparable.”

Navratri Day 3: Chandraghanta Devi Mantra

Goddess Chandraghanta is the third form of goddess Durga. This is said to be the married form of Parvati. And her Dhyan Mantra is:

पिण्डज प्रवरारूढ़ा चण्डकोपास्त्रकैर्युता। प्रसीदम तनुते महयं चन्द्रघण्टेति विश्रुता।।

Pindaj Pravrarudha Chandkpasrkaryuta . Prasidam Tanute Mahyam Chandrghnteti Vishruta.

The meaning of this mantra is, “O Goddess Chandraghanta, who rides on tiger, angry on enemies, holds many weapons in 10 hands, please on me.”

Navratri Day 4: Kushmanda Devi Mantra

Maa Kushmanda is the Fourth form of Maa Durga. The holy scripts suggest that goddess Kushmanda resides inside the sun and enlightens the whole world with her ultimate energy. And her Dhyan Mantra is:

वन्दे वांछित कामार्थे चंद्रार्घ्कृत शेखराम, सिंहरुढ़ा अष्टभुजा कुष्मांडा यशस्वनिम||

Vande Vance hit Kamarthe Chandrarghkrit Shekhram, Singhrudha Ashtbhuja Kushmanda Yashswini.

The meaning of this mantra is, “I worship the moon-worshipped Shekrama, the lion-riding eight-armed Kushmanda, the illustrious one, for the fulfillment of desired desires”

Navratri Day 5: Skanda Devi Mantra

Sanka Devi is the fifth form of goddess Durga. It is said that when maa Parvati gave birth to Skanda also known as Kartikeya, hence, she came to be known as Skanda Mata. And her Dhyan Mantra is:

“सिंहासनगता नित्यं पद्माश्रितकरद्वया| शुभदास्तु सदा देवी स्कन्दमाता यशस्विनी||”

Sinhasangata nityam padmashritkardvya , Shubhdastu sada Devi Skandmata Yashswini.

The meaning of his mantra is, “She is always seated on the throne with her two hands resting on the lotus May Goddess Skanda mata, the illustrious, always bestow auspiciousness.”

Navratri Day 6: Katyayani Devi Mantra

Maa Katyayani is the Sixth form of goddess Durga and her name is driven from her father Katyayan Rishi. This incarnation is said to be the angry form of Durga in which she destroyed demon Mahishasura. Her Dhyan Mantra is:

स्वर्णाआज्ञा चक्र स्थितां षष्टम दुर्गा त्रिनेत्राम्। वराभीत करां षगपदधरां कात्यायनसुतां भजामि॥

Swarnagya chakra sthitam shashtam Durga Trinetram. Varabhit Karam shadgpadmdharam katyayansutam Bhajami.

The meaning of this mantra is, “The sixth Durga with three eyes standing on the golden command wheel. I worship that daughter of Katyayana whose hands are fearless and who holds six feet.”

Navratri Day 7: Kalratri Devi Mantra

Goddess Kalratri is the seventh form of Durga. This is also a furious form of Maa Durga in which she destroyed the dangerous demons Sumbha and Nisumbha. Her Dhyan Mantra is:

करालवंदना धोरां मुक्तकेशी चतुर्भुजाम्। कालरात्रिं करालिंका दिव्यां विद्युतमाला विभूषिताम॥

Karalvadnam ghoram muktkeshi chaturbhjam. Kaal Ratrim karalikaam divyam vidyutmala vibhushitam.

The meaning of this mantra is, “The goddess with trishule with loose hair and four arms. The night of darkness was fearsome as the divine adorned with garlands of lightning is here.”

Navratri Day 8: Gauri Devi Mantra

Maha Gauri is the 8th form of goddess Durga. Holy scripts read that at the age of 16, Parvati had extremely fair complexion, hence, she received this name Gauri which means Ultimate fair. On this day, we should also worship young girls. Gauri Mata’s Dhyan Mantra is:

पूर्णन्दु निभां गौरी सोमचक्रस्थितां अष्टमं महागौरी त्रिनेत्राम्।
वराभीतिकरां त्रिशूल डमरूधरां महागौरी भजेम्॥

Purnandu nibhaana Gauri Somachakrastitam Ashtam Mahagauri Trinetram. Varabhitikaran Trishul Damrudharam Mahagauri Bhajem.

Meaning: “Gauri, shining like the full moon, seated in the moon wheel, is the eighth Mahagauri, with three eyes. I worship that great Gauri who is fearless of the best and who holds a trident and a tambourine.”

Navratri Day 9: Siddhidhatri Devi Mantra
Maa Siddhidhatri is the 9th and last form of Durga. It is said that before the universe was even created, Lord Shiva worshiped Para Shakti to get energy and to create the universe. The goddess is also known as the other half of Lord Shiva as she gave her powers to him and came to be known as Siddhi Datri. Here mantra is:

स्वर्णावर्णा निर्वाणचक्रस्थितां नवम् दुर्गा त्रिनेत्राम्।शख, चक्र, गदा, पदम, धरां सिद्धीदात्री भजेम्॥

Swarnavarna Nirvanachakrasthitham Navam Durga Trinetram. Shakh, Chakra, Gada, Padam, Dhara Siddhidatri Bhajem.

Meaning of this Dhyan Mantra is, “I worship that golden-coloured, new Durga, three-eyed, situated in the wheel of Nirvana, the bearer of perfection, the earth with the wing, the wheel, the club and the lotus feet.”
