India to finally have split captaincy, will Rohit Sharma just lead in ODIs?

After the poor performance of Team India in the T20 World Cup 2022, BCCI’s new president Roger Binny is coming up with some serious changes. First, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has dismissed the senior selection committee and invited fresh applications.

And now reports suggest that the board is planning to remove skipper Rohit Sharma as the T20 and Test captain. With this India will finally have split captaincy in cricket and just like several countries like England and Australia, India too will have different captains in different formats.

Reportedly, Rohit Sharma will be replaced as the T20 captain by all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Precisely, that the reason behind the grooming of star all-rounder. The 29-years-old has not only proven the mettle of his leadership by lighting the IPL trophy in the debut year but he was also appointed as the skipper for a foreign tour. And Pandya did win the T20 series against Ireland at their home ground by 2-0 and hit the last nail in the coffin.

He is currently on New Zealand tour where Team India has to play limited overs series (3 T20Is and 3 ODIs). Hardik is leading Team India in T20 format as regular captain Rohit Sharma has been rested. Shikhar Dhawan will take over the responsibility of captaincy in the ODI series against New Zealand. The first match of the T20 series canceled without the toss due to rain in Wellington on Friday.

Meanwhile, BCCI sources have said that Hardik is perfectly fit to take over the captaincy of the T20 team and he will be prepared from now on for the T20 World Cup to be held in the year 2024. The selectors will meet before the next T20 series and officially announce Hardik as India’s next T20 captain. The board is planning to announcement official before the IND vs SL series which will be played in January 2023.

Moreover, for the moment Rohit will continue to handle the captaincy in ODI and Test formats. But BCCI also wants to take Test captaincy from Rohit. Just like England, BCCI wants to have different captains in all the three formats. They want Rohit to just lead Team India in ODIs and a new Test captain can also be introduced next year. Who do you think can lead Men In Blue in Tests?
