K Kavitha leads hunger strike at Jantar Mantar

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) senior leader K Kavitha commenced a six-hour-long hunger strike today in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar seeking to introduce the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament which has been pending for a long.

The protest was inaugurated by the CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury and held by Kavitha’s NGO Bharat Jagriti. Among the leaders present at the strike were Samajwadi Party leader Seema Shukla, Telangana Education Minister Savita Indra Reddy as well as state Women and Child Welfare Minister Sathyavathi Rathore.

Sanjay Singh and Chitra Sarwara from Aam Aadmi Party(AAP), Naresh Gujral from Akali Dal, Anjum Javed Mirza from People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Shami Firdous from National Conference (NC), Sushmita Dev from Trinamool Congress, KC Tyagi from Janata Dal-United (JDU), Seema Malik from Nationalist Congress Party India (NCP), Narayana K from Communist Party of India (CPI), Shyam Rajak from Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), Priyanka Chaturvedi from Shiv Sena and ex-Congress leader Kapil Sibal have confirmed their participation.

On Thursday, Kavitha said 18 political parties will participate in the protest. But, as of now, leaders of 12 political parties have joined the BRS leader looking for early passage of the Women’s Bill which seeks to reserve 33 percent of seats in Lok Sabha and all state legislative assemblies for women.

When asked whether any politicians from the Congress will join her in her protest, Kavitha on Thursday said she had written to the party’s leader Mallikarjun Kharge asking him to send representatives from his party to take part.

Kavitha, who is facing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) heat in the now-scrapped Delhi liquor scam, hit at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for not fulfilling its promises. She said BJP had promised to implement the legislation in the run-up to the 2014 and 2019 general elections but did not keep the word despite coming to power with a clear majority.

The BRS leader’s hunger strike comes a day before her questioning by the ED on March 11. Kavitha said she will face ED as she has not done anything wrong.

The ED case alleges that the K Kavitha is part of the South Cartel that benefited from kickbacks after Delhi’s now-scrapped liquor policy came into force.

The BRS leader has denied the allegations and accused the center of misusing probe agencies for political goals. She said BJP has been constantly sending probe agencies to Telangana since last year because the elections in the state are due in November or December.

In a disturbing incident reported from Telangana, a minor girl travelling with her family was allegedly raped and assaulted by a co-passenger inside the washroom of a train, according to the Government Railway Police (GRP).

The incident, which has sent shockwaves across the region, occurred on the morning of April 3, 2025. According to details, the accused, a man in his 20s, subjected the minor to aggravated sexual assault and rape during the journey. The girl was accompanied by her family members at the time of the incident. Reports indicate that the accused followed her to the train’s washroom, where he carried out the assault.

Following the complaint lodged by the family, a case has been registered at the Railway Police Station (RPS) in Secunderabad. The GRP has launched a thorough investigation to apprehend the perpetrator and ensure justice for the victim. A senior GRP official informed PTI that the accused is currently being interrogated, but no arrest has been confirmed as of yet.

This horrific event has reignited concerns about passenger safety on Indian railways, particularly for women and children. The authorities are working to gather evidence and identify the suspect, who was travelling on the same train.

In a related and equally alarming incident earlier this month, on March 22, a 23-year-old woman sustained serious injuries after jumping from a moving MMTS (Multi-Modal Transport System) train to escape an attempted rape.

The woman was travelling alone in the ladies’ coach from Secunderabad railway station to Medchal when the attack occurred. She reported that after two other female passengers alighted at Alwal railway station, an unidentified man entered the coach and attempted to assault her. In a desperate bid to save herself, she leapt from the moving train, resulting in severe injuries.

Hyderabad SP North Zone Chandana Deepti told PTI that the victim is currently receiving treatment at Gandhi Hospital. “A girl in her early 20s was attacked by a man on the train. To protect herself, she jumped from the moving train. She has sustained injuries and is under medical care. We have registered a case and deployed four special teams to track down the accused, who fled the scene.”

The former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha on Friday was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the Delhi liquor policy case.

The ED on Friday raided the premises of Kavitha, BRS MLC, in Hyderabad. Kavitha was also quizzed by the probe agency in connection with a money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy irregularities matter.

According to reports, a heated exchange of words was witnessed between ED and BRS leader KTR Rao at the residence of Kavitha. Kavitha has been brought to Delhi by ED and she will be further questioned in the case.

In support of BRS leader Kavitha, the BRS Working President KTM Rao and former Minister Harish Rao gathered with a large number of people at the residence of Kavitha and shouted slogans in the party’s support.

The Supreme Court today adjourned the hearing till March 19 on BRS leader Kavitha’s plea against ED summons in Delhi excise policy irregularities matter.

The central probe agency had claimed that Kavitha was linked to a South Group lobby of liquor traders. Reportedly, the South Group were the main player under the Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case for 2021-22.

The MLC Kavitha’s brother Rao could be seen confronting ED officials after he was asked how family members had entered the house.

On her arrest, BRS leader Ravula Sridhar Reddy said ED had taken her away from her residence. The case is sub-judice, posted before the court on 19th March. Kavitha has also responded to the summons that have been sent, he added. The leader also expressed his concern that it is election season and she has to campaign.

He also pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Hyderabad and ED wants to arrest her. What do Centre want to show, he asked. There is no evidence and no cash has been seized. Rejecting the allegation, he said BJP and Congress are trying to intimidate BRS. The party will explore the legal options before them and fight. He said the party believes in the judiciary and the truth will come out.
