Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai slams Centre over pollution, asks if BJP holds no responsibility

As the residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region breathe toxic air, the AAP led government in Delhi and the BJP government in the Centre involved in a blame game. Delhi’s air quality rose to severe plus category on Friday morning.  The city’s Air Quality Index skyrocketed to 471 at 9 am today.

Amidst the rising pollution, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that it is wrong to think that Delhi government alone can control pollution completely. Speaking to India Today, the Environment Minister questioned the Union Minister’s accountability , without naming Bhupender Yadav. He further inquired if the Bharatiya Janata Party holds no responsibility.

On the other hand, BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla claimed that Delhi has become a gas chamber under the leadership of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The BJP leader asserted that Arvind Kejriwal has ensured that Air Quality Index levels are at their highest in the last four to five years and that he has done nothing to tackle pollution.

Poonawalla underlined that earlier Arvind Kejriwal used to blame stubble burning in Punjab but now they have a government in the state. However, the incidents of stubble burning have only increased in Punjab, he noted. He further asserted that the AAP government in Delhi will only blame Centre, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. He also warned that if people of Delhi breathe this air, it will be hazardous.

Nonetheless, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai added that Delhi pollution does not come from the national capital and that the pollution sources from outside are contributing to Delhi’s pollution. He asserted that the AAP government in Delhi is working on a war footing. Highlighting all the emergency measures including a ban on pollution trucks, commercial four-wheelers  and all types of constructions, Gopal Rai added that there is smog in the national capital and the government has already taken steps to combat the situation.
