Panellists feel that the government must make a serious effort to understand problems of crop growers, address these through smart policies
Security officials today used water cannons and fired teargas shells on agitating farmers when they tried to break the barricading at the UP gate near Ghazipur border to enter Delhi. Reports said that police also resorted to lathicharge on farmers, injuring over 30 of them.
APN’s popular debate Mudda discussed the issue. Anchorperson Anant Tyagi spoke to panellists including Congress’ Uma Shanker Pandey, RLD’s Rohit Aggarwal, NCP’s Seema Malik, BJP’s Rajesj Jha, farmers’ activist Alok Verma and APN consultant Govind Pant Raju.
Jha said: “A meeting has started with the protesters. Is it important for 30,000 people to cross the borders?” Verma said: “Farmers want to make BJP realise its responsibilities. Why are loans not being waived for poor farmers while the rich are getting their way?”
Malik said: “These are not militants; these are our own people, so why are we treating them like terrorists? This is the fourth farmer protest in six months. They have genuine demands; the government should do something now.”
Pandey said: “This government is only good at making up lies. The BJP is playing politics with farmers. Now that elections are near, the government is saying it will increase MRP. These are only promises.”
Aggarwal said: “The government should not have ordered lathicharge on agitating farmers.”
Raju said: “It’s a sad reflection that whosoever is in power, behaves in this way. Why wasn’t it decided to hold talks right in midst of them all, instead of teargassing them first? This is the failure of the UP government?”
Jha said: “Why did the farmers choose October 2 as the day of protest? The government has been trying to hold talks for the last three days. Yesterday the chief minister wanted to talk but the union leaders decided to march to Delhi.”
Verma said: “On October 2, are only the country’s politicians allowed to visit Gandhiji’s samadhi? Why can’t farmers express what they want to on this date?”
Jha said: “The government is doing its work; it is also discussing how loans can be waived. The percentage of farmer suicides has come down, farmers are now happy.” When Anant pointed out then why farmers are protesting, Jha said:”It’s a political move orchestrated by some parties.”
Aggarwal said: “The BJP is either lying or does not know the truth. What kind of governance is this? Farmers are crying, they are protesting, they are dying hungry.”
Raju said: “Farmers are reeling under the same problems they have always been fighting. This is because farmers’ issues have never become a movement of sorts that would make the government change its policies. No one has ever tried to understand farmers’ problems.”
Anant, meanwhile, informed through a news clip that after talks today, the government has agreed to some demands. But on the MS Swaminathan report and loan waivers there has been no breakthrough. Seven demands have been agreed to, and two were left out.
Verma said:”There has been no resolution to the two main demands. So it’s to be seen what the next step of the farmers will be.”
Malik said: “Fulfilment of the promises is important. The two demands left out are also important.”
Pandey said: “Farmers have been committing suicide in large numbers. BJP leaders cannot ignore this fact, and should not be lying on TV cameras.”
Raju said: “Farmers have been seen as vote-bank by all parties. Loan waiver is not a solution to farmer woes. Before polls, parties waive loans, to grab votes, and this is why the farmer’s lot remains the same.”
